Learn the beautiful art of medieval illumination at this hands-on candle painting workshop in Leeds.In this cosy and intimate activity, you will learn how to decorate your own personalised candle inspired by historical manuscripts. This is a small group tutorial designed to provide a friendly, creative atmosphere where you will receive plenty of personal guidance. You don't need any art or calligraphy experience to join, as this workshop is completely beginner-friendly.During the session, which lasts approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, you will:
- Choose your own personal initial from a selection of hand-drawn medieval alphabet designs
- Add colour, metallic highlights, and decorative details to your initial
- Watch as your artwork is carefully transferred onto a 7x7 cm candle using a special heat technique
- Package your finished candle in a beautiful 9x9x9 cm gift box

Hello, I’m Mercy, a calligrapher originally from Hong Kong and now based in the UK. I’ve been living here for the past two years, teaching calligraphy at the beautiful Leeds Corn Exchange.I began my calligraphy journey in 2017, and since then I’ve had the joy of sharing this art with people from all walks of life. Over the years, I’ve organised and led more than 400 workshops, guiding participants to discover the beauty of letters, gold, and creativity.For me, calligraphy is not only about writing but also about connecting history, craftsmanship, and personal expression. I love bringing traditional techniques — such as gilding with real gold — into modern workshops where everyone can create something meaningful and unique.
