What you'll do
This course will run from Thursday 16th May to Thursday 13th June.
If you’ve admired beautiful Copperplate calligraphy and wished you too could create perfectly formed symmetrical lettering, here is your chance to learn! Kirsten has broken down the techniques and rules of this formal, classic style into easily digestible steps. If you've been too nervous to try it before, fear not — we’ll make it fun!
Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to improve your style, we will take your Copperplate lettering art from basic strokes to writing stunning calligraphic quotes, complete with fabulous flourishes and beautiful envelopes in five engaging, online classes.
Your expert teacher will take you through everything you need to know, including:
- Why and when to use different line guides.
- Getting to grips with forming words.
- Refining your spacing and rule up and how to centre your work.
- Explore simple layouts and go through the process of composition, from the first draft to the final piece.
- What to do when ascenders and descenders bump into each other.
- A whole session devoted to practising flourishing so that you can feel confident about where and how to add a swirl and a swash.
- Perfecting the art of envelope addressing.
We will share all of our top tips and simple ways to practice at home and improve muscle memory, building on the skills learned from each lesson to take your calligraphy to the next level. As well as the virtual experience, you will also get a calligraphy kit full of useful supplies to use.
Every session of this course will be recorded, so if you miss a week for any reason, you will be able to watch the recording to catch up!

What you'll get in your craft kit
An oblique/straight pen holder (depending on whether you are left or right-handed), different Copperplate nibs to try, a paintbrush, black ink, white gouache, an A4 Rhodia dot pad, a gold finetec so that you can work onto dark cards with stunning metallics and of course all the worksheets, templates, selection of cards, envelopes and gift tags that you need for the 5 weeks, plus a little extra if you'd like to do the 'homework' exercises.NO KIT OPTION
You will only receive the worksheets that will be posted out to you prior to the event.
If you have selected the no kit option please feel free to use a selection of your own favourite nibs.
What you'll need
In addition, you will need: ruler, rubber, and though not essential, we would recommend having a light pad which is available to purchase from our shop. Please also have a jar of water and a napkin/cloth incase of any spillages.
