In this soldering workshop for intermediate students struggling with soldering, you will have the opportunity to overcome any stumbling blocks and build confidence in this one-day class. You will focus on mastering the fundamentals of soldering by working with wire and sheet metal to learn and practise the principles of joining metal using a flame.
Using copper to begin with, during the workshop, you will:
  • Learn about different solders, fluxes, and types of gas
  • Practise various soldering techniques including pick, pallion, stick, sweat, and wire soldering
  • Explore the effects of annealing and pickling
  • Discover how to use tools like tension, binding wire, third hand, and other props
  • Create multiple joints
You will go home having gained confidence and understanding in your new skills.
The class will run from 11am to 5pm, with a short lunch break included. Make sure to bring any necessary glasses for close-up work, wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes, and tie back long hair when working at the bench.
Knowledge required
Some knowledge of soldering is required.

There will be a short lunch break. You can bring your own lunch or avail yourself of the many local eateries.

Alison Flanders has more than 30 years of experience designing and hand-crafting silver and gold jewellery. After graduating from Middlesex University in 1976 with a BA Hons degree in silversmithing and design, Alison moved to the States, where for many years she ran her own jewellery business.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, she also held a number of teaching positions in colleges of art in New York City, including the prestigious Parsons New School for Design. Her work has been exhibited at numerous events throughout America and the UK, including the American Crafts Council Show, Philadelphia Museum Show, American Craft Exposition, New York International Gift Fair and the Chelsea Craft Show and Dazzle in the UK.
She relocated back to London in 2005 and is now based at Cockpit Studios in Holborn where she continues to make work for private collectors and teach students in her dedicated workshop.
