My journey into teaching Ikebana started in a somewhat unexpected way, through my work as an event and wedding florist. I spent years designing lavish arrangements and creating picture-perfect floral displays for unforgettable moments. But amid all the hustle and grand designs I found myself longing for something deeper, something more spiritual and sustainable. “Mottainai” a Japanese concept that roughly translates to "what a waste" or "too good to waste, " really resonated with me at that time. It focuses on respecting resources and avoiding wastefulness.
A pivotal moment came when I found myself drawn to a beautifully written book about traditional Japanese arts and Ikebana. I quickly learned what a revered and refined art form Ikebana is, unlike anything I had encountered before. It spoke of balance, simplicity, and the art of finding beauty in minimalism. I was instantly captivated.
Ikebana isn’t just about arranging flowers, it is a disciplined practice of form, space, and mindful intention. I immediately felt a deep connection with this philosophy, as if this art form had been waiting for me all along. I discovered the art of Ikebana is a life-long practice about capturing the essence of each element, giving space and championing the beauty of every stem and branch.
It became clear to me how perfectly Ikebana aligned with the person I had always aspired to be; graceful, creative and attuned to the natural world. From that moment on, I knew I needed to immerse myself in this practice.
After many years of training, commitment and practice with the Sogetsu School of Ikebana I qualified to Teacher status and was bestowed the special honour of my flower name, Eiyu.
As I continue this life-long practice I have found myself gravitating toward foraging for unique, unexpected materials, twisting branches with lichen, curled brown leaves, wild grasses, seed pods, things most people might overlook. I love the thrill of discovering something truly special and giving it a new life in an arrangement. It’s become a bit of a signature for me, finding beauty where others might not think to look.
Teaching Ikebana became a natural extension of this journey. I knew I wanted to share this incredible practice with others, not just as an art form but as a way to slow down and reconnect with themselves and the world around them. There’s something so fulfilling about guiding someone through the process. Seeing that moment when they step back and realise they’ve created something truly beautiful and unique. The joy and pride in their faces are absolutely priceless.
Personally for me Ikebana is a way of life. Using Lao Tzu quote, “nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished”. We are able to find harmony not just in the arrangement but within ourselves. Everyday I spend time in nature to remind myself of its rhythms, observe how trees, plants, flowers grow and change throughout the seasons without haste, reinforcing the idea that progress takes time.
I consistently get joy and more creativity from teaching Ikebana and sharing my knowledge with others who also discover that same sense of wonder, calm and inspiration that first drew me in.
