I’m Arundika Weerasekera, founder of Hues of Batik Design House, a British–Sri Lankan textile studio I started with my mother in 2017.
But our story began long before that. In the 1940s, my grandmother worked for the Ladies League in Sri Lanka, embroidering by hand and proudly telling the family, “I’m stitching for the Queen.” Years later, my mother ran a small clothing production space from our home, so textiles, making and craftsmanship were always part of the world I grew up in.
Today, through Hues of Batik, I work with the traditional craft of hand-waxed and dyed batik, bringing it into a contemporary world inspired by equestrian heritage, British country houses and beautiful interiors.
I love teaching batik because no two pieces ever turn out exactly the same. The wax cracks, the dye moves, and the maker’s hand becomes part of the finished piece. My classes are designed to help you slow down, learn a heritage craft and create something beautiful enough to genuinely want to keep in your home.
Whether you are completely new to batik or already love textiles and interiors, I want the experience to feel creative, relaxed and very personal.
