Try something new and enjoy a full day of creativity at Calverley Old Hall Community Space with this relaxed, hands-on rag rugging workshop led by Kim from Darn It! Workshops. Surrounded by like-minded makers, you’ll learn the foundations of this traditional craft while designing a piece that reflects your personal style.
This workshop is perfect for complete beginners -- no prior experience needed. Kim will guide you gently through each stage, offering tips, support, and design advice so you can build confidence and enjoy every moment of the making process.
What to expect:
  • Learn two versatile rag rug techniques and use them to create wall art, home décor, a brooch, or another small piece.
  • Work with a wide range of reclaimed and recycled materials, including fabric scraps, colourful rope, buttons, and more.
  • Receive step-by-step guidance on technique, shaping, texture, and design.
  • Take home the tools and skills to complete your piece comfortably at your own pace.
  • Enjoy a friendly, social atmosphere with tea and coffee provided (please bring your own packed lunch; a fridge is available).
Please note:
  • No parking on site -- please use public transport where possible; on-street parking is available nearby if needed
  • The Community Space has level access throughout, with some historic-building limitations. For detailed accessibility information, please refer to the Access Guide or contact the organisers with any specific requirements
You’ll leave the day feeling inspired, equipped with new skills, and carrying the beginnings of a beautiful handmade piece -- along with everything you need to complete it at home.

Travelling workshops run by Kim Searle.
All my workshops are based on encouraging sustainability, building community and supporting attendees well-being. I am passionate about ensuring craft sessions are accessible to all, providing discounts on most courses for people on low/no incomes, seeking out venues that are wheelchair accessible and ensuring that workshops are calming with more of an emphasis on enjoyment and new skills over perfection.
I also run workshops at festivals including Glastonbury, Green Man, End of the Road, Underneath the Stars, Deershed, Wychwood Cornbury, Greenbelt, Just So, Beacons, FarmFest, BeatHerder and more!
I studied BA (Hons) Textile Crafts at the University of Huddersfield, specialising in textile printing. I’ve also studied weaving, felting, bookbinding, dark room photography and fine art printing at L'Ecole des Beaux Artes at Besancon, The Academy of Design in Kuopio and Leeds University, as well as studying a range of creative techniques on a foundation course at UcCA Canterbury.
