I’m Lucy Newman, a hand embroidery artist and educator specialising in thread painting, the technique of creating detailed, painterly images using only needle and thread. I studied Printed Textile Design at Central Saint Martins and later trained in traditional hand embroidery techniques at the Royal School of Needlework. In 2017, I founded LJN Studio, creating bespoke embroidery commissions before shifting my focus towards my own embroidered artworks. My work has been recognised with the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery and shortlisting for the Fine Art Textile Award, Share Prize and Waverton Art Prize, and has been featured in Embroidery Magazine, Stitch Magazine, Fiber Art Now and Consilience Journal.
I love teaching because embroidery is both accessible and endlessly rich. You can begin with a needle, thread and a few simple stitches, but there is so much to discover through colour, texture and detail. I have taught adults and young people through workshops, including specialist hand embroidery sessions with The Creative Dimension Trust. My aim is to make techniques like thread painting feel approachable and enjoyable, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced stitcher wanting to develop your skills.
