What you'll do
Feel the hygge by adding some charm to your home this festive season by making one of these fellas.
Heather will take you step by step through a combination of simple beginner's level needle and wet felting techniques.
There is a choice between a red, dark red or grey hat and a mid or light grey beard. How tall your finished Tomte is depends very much on the length of the hat you create, but a reasonable estimate is between 15 and 20cm tall.
The workshop is timed to be quite leisurely, so for those of you who work faster, there'll be the option to make a smaller hanging tree decoration Tomte too.
Completely perfect for groups, whether family, friends, colleagues, or a mixture of all! The Tabletop Workshop home studio in Camberwell suits between 4 and 10 max (a little cosy), but if there are more of you or it's easier, I can come to you.
Your Tomte's hat will be made using a combination of Perendale wool batt and merino wool pre-felt. Their beards are made from Gotland locks sheared from a small flock who live in Essex. Extra materials will be available to purchase at the end of the class.
Tomte are mythological creatures from Nordic folklore which today are typically associated with the winter solstice and Christmas. Generally described as short, having long beards and a tall conical hat in grey, red, or another bright colour. They are sometimes portrayed as having the appearance of a garden gnome, and Tomte translates to gnome in English.

What to bring
If you have a wine or champagne/sparkling wine cork to recycle, please bring it - you'll find out why on the day. If you don't, I can supply one.

Tabletop Workshops is the teaching arm of Purr & Wag It and is run by Heather Fiona Martin.
A graduate of Goldsmiths College, University of London. She is an experienced wet felt maker who for well over a decade has been making felt with people of all ages and with widely differing abilities in educational and community settings across Greater London.
Purr & Wag It (PaW), her wet felted pet portraits and landscapes small business was born out of a gift for her brother. It marries her love of animals with her love for making and in particular pushing the boundaries of fine detail in wet felt making.
Tabletop Workshops, the teaching arm of the business affords Heather the opportunity and the great enjoyment of facilitating others creativity in the relaxed setting of her home in Camberwell. She lives with her daughter and 3 cats. Winnie and the boys will be elsewhere in the house during the workshops but if you have cat allergies Tabletop Workshops may not be the right creative space for you.
Heather holds an enhanced DBS certificate for children and vulnerable adults.
