Drawing for the Scared and Art for the Anxious - Weekly Class

Let go of your fears and anxieties about art and connect with your inner creativity.

6 x 2.5 hours Class size 1 to 5 guests       £150 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

If you've always thought you can't draw, this mixed media course is exactly for you. Whether you felt artistic once upon a time or you're discovering creativity for the first time, you'll spend each class learning to see rather than worrying about producing the "perfect" drawing. Your teacher will guide you through drawing exercises that teach your hand to follow your eye – simple, low-pressure, and surprisingly freeing once you let go of the outcome.
Those drawings become the starting point for the real magic. You'll take what you've created and use it as inspiration to explore colour and design through collage, printmaking, and painting. Each method builds on what you've discovered, so your skills develop naturally as you move through the course. There's no hierarchy of ability here – just hands-on experimentation in a small, friendly group where everyone's exploring their own creative path.
What makes this special is the space itself. You'll be surrounded by a supportive community of fellow students who are all tapping into something they thought might be buried. That shared energy is powerful – it gives you permission to try things, make marks you might not usually make, and discover that creativity is still there, waiting for you.
By the end, you won't just have a collection of artwork to take home. You'll have rekindled something inside yourself – the spark of confidence that comes from putting your hand to paper and discovering what you're capable of.

The purpose of the Garden Studio workshops is to invite people into my Garden Studio to share the skills that I have developed working in a wide range of materials as a designer and maker for 30 years in the theatre, creating sets, props, and puppets. Most of my work has involved making something that I have not made before, so there has been an element of learning in every project that I have done. I strongly believe in having a go, experimenting, and learning from your mistakes.
Over the past 20 years, I have run workshops in both 2D and 3D art forms for diverse groups, including BTEC and university students, older people, autistic groups, teenagers, and children, and approach teaching with a light touch and like to encourage people's latent creativity. I enjoy the practical aspect of showing people how to use tools and working with materials that they might not have worked with before.
In recent years, I have been developing my own work as an artist - in particular drawing, collage, and creating sculptures out of found wood and stone carving.
The classes will also be supported by my partner, who is a highly experienced sculptor who works in wax and clay and carves in stone, creating naturalistic and abstracted figures.
The workshops I run are a chance to take time out of the fast pace of modern life and allow yourself to develop the creativity which exists in us all. They are an opportunity to use your eyes, hands, and physically engage with the materials you are using in ways that are mindful, absorbing, and playful.
And in between moments of quiet concentrated activity, there will be chats and laughs and tea and lunch - an opportunity to get to know people in an unpressured way. And if the weather is nice, we can sit in the garden for tea!
