BACKGROUND:
My passion for photography started way back in the 1990’s, when I studied a Fine Art Photography degree at The Glasgow School of Art. Although I graduated in 2001, it took me another 15 years or so to launch my photography business (in a full-time capacity): David Gilliver Photography Ltd.
Around 15 or so years ago, I started receiving requests from other keen photographers to run Workshops. It was back in 2010 that I started running my popular Light Painting Photography Workshops, and then in 2021, I also launched my Macro Photography (Little People) Workshops. I adore sharing my passion for photography, and it’s a privilege to introduce others to these very niche creative outlets.
It’s funny – I never set out to teach. It is something that has unfolded organically for me over the years. As well as running my own Workshop events for other keen photographers, I now also travel the length and breadth of the UK delivering my Workshops to pupils in secondary schools across Scotland and England. I am lucky enough to have visited some of the most prestigious schools in Britain, e.g. Dollar Academy, Haberdashers Boys School, The Royal High School, The Glasgow Academy, Rugby School & Gordonstoun School (the school the King attended!).
Over the years, I have fallen in love with teaching, and I am excited to find out where this journey takes me next.
EXPERIENCE
I have over 25 years of experience as a photographer, and I have run private Workshop events for some very large companies that you are likely to have heard of (e.g. Lexus, WEX Photo Video, Samsung). I also deliver dozens of online presentations to Camera Clubs and Photographic Societies around the world every year.
My work has been featured in numerous magazines and published in many online press articles, including: The BBC, The Times, The Telegraph, Yahoo News, The Guardian, The Mail Online, Metro, Daily Telegraph, Entertainment Weekly, Digital Photography Magazine. This very welcome coverage has no doubt helped me work with some of the biggest names around: Adobe, SONY, Nikon, Qualcomm, Samsung, Honda, Lexus, to mention a few. I adore working on bespke commissions with big clients!
One of my proudest achievements is writing my eBooks. Back in 2020 during the pandemic, I dedicated several months to writing two extensive books about my creative approach to both my Macro Photography and Light Painting. My eBooks have gone on to sell over 1, 000 copies, and in early 2026 I published ‘Part 2’ of each series. My eBooks can be found on my website, and attendees of my Workshops also receive a copy of the relevant eBook at the end.
AWARDS:
I have a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art Photography, and I have won three national awards from The British Photography Awards (2022, 2023, 2024).
