Corporate Creative Workshop: Japanese Stab Binding (London & Online)
Looking for a meaningful, creative team-building experience in London or online? This calming, hands-on workshop introduces your team to the traditional Japanese art of stab binding, where participants create their own A5 hand-stitched journal or sketchbook from scratch.
Perfect for corporate wellness days, team bonding, offsite experiences, or virtual sessions, this workshop encourages focus, creativity, and collaboration in a relaxed and engaging environment.
What the workshop includes:
Participants will be guided step by step through the full process of creating a hand-bound book, using professional tools and traditional techniques.
Step-by-step process:
Prepare the cover and pages
  • Align your paper and cover materials.
  • Measure and mark your spine for even hole placement.
Punch the binding holes
  • Use a screwdriver punch and awl to create precise holes along the spine.
  • (Note: This stage requires care and effort but is an essential and rewarding part of the process.)
Prepare your binding thread
  • Cut your thread to approximately 15 times the length of the spine.
  • Thread the needle securely, ready for binding.
Begin binding
  • Start with Step 1 of the stitch pattern.
  • Follow a guided sequence of movements, looping through the holes in order.
  • Carefully track each step as you build the pattern.
Follow the repeating stitch pattern
  • Complete the same structured sequence 3 times, forming a consistent decorative spine.
  • The design creates a maple leaf-inspired stitch pattern, both functional and visually striking.
Finish and secure
  • Tie off the thread neatly.
  • Inspect and adjust your binding to ensure a clean, durable finish.
Personalise your journal
Add optional decorative elements such as pressed flowers, collage, or simple illustrations to the cover.
What participants will achieve:
  • A fully completed A5 hand-bound journal or sketchbook
  • A decorative, maple leaf-inspired stitched spine

I'm Maria, an artist and illustrator based in South East London. I’m inspired by the natural world, by my travels, and childhood memories. I’ve loved painting and drawing ever since I was a little girl growing up in Romania. I was lucky to have a mum who encouraged my early artistic efforts. She used to sell my handmade cards in her office, and I’d earn extra pocket money by taking my work to local craft fairs. Later on, I did my Masters in Art at the University of Fine Arts in Cluj-Napoca and then spent time studying in Italy before moving to London and working as a graphic designer. Today I specialise in watercolour, which is my favourite technique. I love bold colours and botanical illustration, anything that evokes happiness and healing.
