Pottery Throwing

Pottery Throwing

Pottery throwing is the art of shaping clay on a spinning wheel using your hands. It’s a hands-on, mindful process where you’ll learn to centre the clay, form simple shapes, and create your own unique handmade pottery. Whether you’re making a mug, bowl or vase, every piece is one of a kind and made to be used and enjoyed.

Pottery Trimming

Pottery Trimming

Pottery trimming is the stage where your wheel-thrown pottery is refined once the clay has reached a leather-hard stage. Using specialist tools, you’ll remove excess clay, shape the base and create a neatly finished bottom. This careful process improves balance, enhances the form and gives each piece a professional finish. It’s a rewarding step that prepares your pottery for glazing and brings it one step closer to becoming a beautiful, functional ceramic.

Pottery Glazing

Pottery Glazing

Glazing is the final stage of the pottery-making process, where your handmade pieces come to life with colour, texture and a durable finish. You’ll choose from a selection of studio glazes and learn how they transform during the firing process. Once glazed, your pottery is fired for a final time, creating beautiful, functional ceramics that are ready to be enjoyed for years to come. Every piece is uniquely yours.

Discover the complete pottery-making journey in this hands-on 3-week course, where you’ll create your own wheel-thrown ceramics from start to finish in my intimate studio between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. With a maximum of four students, you’ll enjoy plenty of individual guidance in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
* Week 1: Learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing, from preparing and centring clay to creating your first bowls and cylinders.
* Week 2: Refine your 2 favourite pieces by trimming away excess clay, creating a beautifully finished foot ring and learning how to improve balance and form.
* Week 3: Bring your pottery to life by choosing from a selection of studio glazes before your work is professionally kiln fired.
All clay, tools, glazes and firings are included, and you’ll keep up to two finished handmade pieces to collect approximately two weeks after your final class.
What you'll get
You’ll create a selection of wheel-thrown pieces, such as cups, bowls or small vessels. After the throwing session, you’ll choose your four favourite pieces to continue refining. Following the trimming session, you’ll select your two best pieces to glaze during the final week of the course.
This process allows you to focus on developing your skills at each stage while finishing two handmade ceramic pieces to take home and enjoy.
Knowledge required
No previous pottery experience is needed—this course is perfect for complete beginners. You’ll be guided through each stage of the process with clear demonstrations and plenty of individual support.
All you need is a willingness to learn, a little patience, and the enthusiasm to get your hands dirty. Whether you’re trying pottery for the first time or looking to build your confidence at the wheel, you’ll learn at your own pace in a relaxed, supportive environment.
What to bring
Just bring yourself and a willingness to have a go! Everything you’ll need for the workshop is provided, including clay, tools, aprons and refreshments.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little messy and flat, closed-toe shoes. Aprons are provided, but pottery can be a hands-on activity, so it’s best not to wear your favourite outfit.
To make throwing on the wheel more comfortable, we also recommend tying back long hair and removing rings, bracelets and watches before the session.
Most importantly, come ready to relax, get your hands dirty and enjoy the creative process.
Session repeats

I’m deeply passionate about sharing my love for pottery and encouraging people to be brave enough to begin their own creative journey. Clay has a way of meeting you exactly where you are — you don’t need experience, confidence, or a clear plan. You just need to show up, be curious, and be willing to try.
Before working with clay full-time, I trained in interior design, which deeply influences the way I approach my work. I’m always thinking about how objects live in a space and how they’re used day to day. Cooking is my other great passion, and together these influences shape my focus on functional pottery — pieces designed to be held, used, shared, and returned to again and again.
Pottery taught me to slow down, trust my hands, and let go of perfection. That mindset has shaped both my own practice and the way I teach. I’ve seen time and time again how powerful that first step can be — people arriving nervous or unsure, and leaving proud, muddy-handed, and surprised by what they’ve made. Pottery isn’t just about creating objects; it’s about building confidence, patience, and belief in yourself.
My workshops are small, intimate, and relaxed, creating a welcoming space where everyone feels supported. There’s plenty of one-to-one guidance, questions are encouraged, and learning happens through doing. This is a hands-on experience — expect to get your hands dirty, slow down, make mistakes, and properly immerse yourself in the process of making.
What I love most about teaching is watching people surprise themselves. Seeing someone centre clay for the first time, lift a pot off the wheel, or realise I made that never gets old. My hope is that everyone who comes into my studio leaves feeling inspired, proud, and a little braver than when they arrived — whether they continue with pottery or simply carry that confidence into other parts of their lives.
If my workshops help someone reconnect with their creativity, try something new, or take the first step on their own pottery journey, then I feel incredibly lucky to do what I do.
