After many a lonely Friday, Phat Fridays are back! Over the last few months, I've been developing a sustainable and affordable way to print photographic images on the etching press — and after some desperate hours of trial, error, and frustration, I've finally got to a point where I'm getting consistent results. Now I'd love to show you fellow printmakers how far I've got.
The technique is based on Keith Howard's intaglio-type photo etch process. Put simply: you laminate a photosensitive film onto a plate, expose the image using a positive in the UV unit, develop the plate in an alkaline solution, then print.
It's a fascinating process with huge potential — whether you want to dip your toe into printing photographic images or you're looking for a new way to render paintings or drawings onto an etching plate.
This session is aimed at any practising printmakers who are curious about printing photo-based imagery. I'll talk through the full workflow from prepping the positive and film lamination through to exposure, development, and printing.

Believe it or not, print-making saved my life!
A few years ago, my life looked pretty normal: I was a Dad, a garden designer, and a keen walker. Suddenly everything changed. One day I simply couldn’t get off the sitting-room floor. I’d had a nasty bug and the next thing I knew: I was diagnosed with ME/CFS.
For a long time, things were pretty tough, but as the weeks passed, I began to discover painting and printmaking. And as the weeks turned to months I was making more and more art, and steadily feeling better.
Print-making was a refuge: a place to get better from. As I recovered my health I realised I wanted to share the magic of making things with other people; and the dream of Hope Press was born!
Everyone could do with more space in their life, more time for creativity, more peace and flow. I now run a variety of classes and workshops in printmaking – including a course for people with illnesses like mine – I hope you'll find something for you.
