Fall in love with crochet by creating a classic granny square! You’ll be able to combine beautiful colours to stitch this traditional crochet design, perfect for setting you up for so many other projects. Granny squares can be used to make blankets, garments and more – we’re here to help you get started with your first one.

With the help of an Hobbycraft Artisan, you’ll learn how to crochet a granny square by using all the key techniques. You’ll use double and treble stitches, as well as learning how to decipher a granny square pattern and how to change yarn colours.

There’s a kit included with the workshop to give you everything you need for the project. Within the 90-minute session, you’ll be able to create one granny square, though you can continue to practice making more once you’ve got to grips with all the skills. The kit even features a pattern for a granny square blanket to help you continue your adventure in crochet!

This workshop is the perfect way to grow your crochet confidence, with tips and support from a pro! It’s ideal if you already have basic knowledge of the stitches but are looking to refresh yourself or develop further.

  • 5/5 from Ann-Marie Holmes, attended Nov 2023: Debs was brilliant and very patient and very experienced. Area in the store was a bit cold. Also found that customers would interrupt the class by asking where things are in the store which can be a bit off putting. Materials supplied are very good. Would highly doing any of the crochet courses. ⁸

  • 4/5 from Sue Farmery, attended Nov 2023: The actual tuition was good, the lady that thought us was very patient. However the experience was ruined when I got a parking ticket a couple of weeks later. After spending over 2 hours in the store we then went for a coffee and I was fined £60 for parking at Kingsway too long. I can't imagine why we weren't warned of this by the store as I'm sure I'm not the first person this has happened to. Made it a very expensive course and I certainly won't be coming back for any more courses at Hobbycraft.
  • 5/5 from Susan Ride, attended Oct 2023: The teacher was great, very patient. I can now crochet a granny square and was given the materials to make many more. Great value for money
  • 5/5 from Rosalind Case, attended Sep 2023: Teacher was lovely but I wasn’t in the right class, I thought I’d booked a beginners class so I left after 20 minutes, wasn’t fair otherwise on both teacher and other lady. Disappointed but out of my depth.
  • 5/5 from Rebecca Turner, attended Jul 2023: I really enjoyed the Classic Granny Square Workshop that I attended today. The teacher, Deb, was patient and gave clear instructions. She was able to help me when I went wrong.
  • 5/5 from Hilary Miller, attended Jul 2023: The session was great with Debs, she was so patient. We really enjoyed our crochet session.
  • 5/5 from Debra Cooper, attended Jul 2023: I attended the granny square workshop, it was well taught by Deb. She was very clear with the insructions and made a square with us, showing us what to do as well as informing us what to do. She was patient and attended to each participant to ensure we all understood. I will definately be looking out for more classes. Highly recommend
  • 5/5 from Julie Holmes, attended Jul 2023: The granny square course I took was just perfect, It gave me the knowledge to take my skills forward. My teacher explained the technique clearly and in an easy to follow language. It’s my second course at hobby craft derby and the venue is great, clean and accessible, I definitely would recommend a hobby craft course. I myself will be looking out for more courses on crochet to further my skill. Thank you for a great class and encouraging me to keep at it.
  • 5/5 from Jane Patrick, attended Jun 2023: Very good learning experience. Debs (I think that's the teachers name) was excellent, very helpful with tips and experienced knowledge. Went home with a completed Granny Square, so my mission to learn was accomplished. Now practicing at home with great success. Definitely recommend to others.
