Join us in store and talk to a craft expert for tips and advice on your sewing machine or project!

1 hour Class size 1 on 1       £28

Join a Hobbycraft Colleague one-to-one and ask any questions you have about your sewing machine! Need help setting up your new machine? Want to learn about how to use certain tools and accessories? Getting stuck on a certain technique? Our craft expert will share tips and advice tailored to you.

This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

I have just purchased a Hobbycraft 19s sewing machine as I wanted some guidance on its functionality. Heather was warm and welcoming and she instantly made me feel very comfortable. As it was a 1 on 1 session I had her full attention throughout. The way Heather explained and demonstrated things was very reassuring. Her instructions were extremely clear and the hands on experience I obtained gave me the confidence I needed to start to use my new sewing machine. Heather was amazing! I am a novice but the way she planned the session to my stated aims on the booking form. I left left the lesson feeling encouraged, enthusiastic and empowered. Plus I got some inspiration for other things I might like to make with my machine. Her love of sewing and crafting is really infectious. If you were wondering whether it’s worth paying for an introductory lesson - it really is. Thanks Heather.
  • 5/5 from Taz Saleem, attended May 2023: Good taster session for my daughter fleur was lovely kind and patient my daughter enjoyed the session
  • 5/5 from Marion Sandilands, attended May 2023: Tutor Heather was very knowledgeable with an easy friendly style. The area used was fine but perhaps a little small. Heather taught me how to undertake freestyle machine embroidery and the various decorative stitch controls and their range of uses. All the necessary materials were provided. I took along my recently purchased Singer Confidence machine purchased from Hobbycraft which had proved troublesome. Almost immediately I was informed by Heather and the Manager Mark that it was a faulty machine (which is very rare). Without any quibble it was replaced. Great customer service, and an enjoyable and productive one hour session, thank you. Marion Sandilands.
  • 5/5 from Ruby Aldis, attended Apr 2023: Heather was fantastic: very friendly and personable. Ruby, 10 years old, found the sewing machine tutorial incredibly engaging and educational. She has requested a return to see Heather for the next step in her sewing journey. Heather was clearly very knowable and we took away many helpful tips. We couldn't fault her.

  • 4/5 from Leena Mistry, attended Mar 2023: We were a little late starting as the machine I needed didn’t have the top plate on. Otherwise really good tutorial. Could have done with more time. Annoyingly there were people that wanted to talk to the tutor which room up some time so would have been nice if extra time was added as a result
  • 5/5 from Pauline Powell, attended Feb 2023: Have just had a one to one with Heather who not always has a smile on her face, but also has the patience of a saint! I havent touched a sewing machine since I was at school over 45 years ago, but by the end of the session, I knew all the settings on my machine and was sewing not only in straight lines, but had learned to turn corners and even how to sew a circle (a loose description of the shape if Im honest)! She was full of useful tips and once Ive mastered the basics, I will be booking again for a bit more advanced stuff.
  • 5/5 from Christopher Weir, attended Feb 2023: Just a great workshop and enjoyable experience. I learned far more than I expected. Was even given homework to reinforce the learning. I have met a lot of 'experts' who assume because they are proficient in an area they can teach. Noooo In this case my teacher, Heather, was an excellent trainer. The session was enjoyable, structured, and outcome focused. I cannot recommend highly enough. Thanks Heather. Thanks Heather.
  • 5/5 from Annie Roberts, attended Dec 2022: Wonderful workshop with Fleur and my 6 year old learning how to set up her first sewing machine and some basic stitches. The workspace with great with good quality materials. Nothing was too much trouble, Fleur was happy to go over things numerous times when we were unsure. She also advised us on some products to help us create our first project. One happy 6 year old. Thanks Hobbycraft, Fleur and Mark for your excellent service. We’ll be back.

Heather had some amazing tips and totally got what needed from the session She took me back to basics with regards to setting up my machine and I feel so confident and already have my first project ready to go. I couldn't believe when Heather said we have 15 mins leftwhere did the time go? It was a great 1 to 1 experience and total value for money. I really would like to do another session and will look to see if there is one running. Thankyou Heather I now feel able to tackle all the things I need to get done.
  • 5/5 from Melvin Freestone, attended Sep 2022: I booked this workshop knowing it was primarily for beginners, over the years I've done a lot of sewing as a self taught DIYer and making storage bags for tools and camping/hiking equipment. Having bought a new machine to do some curtains and turn up trousers I decided to see if I could get a few tips from this 'basic workshop' and I'm pleased to say that I've come away with some useful info and many thanks to my instructor for a pleasant hour
  • 4/5 from Kash Bhayani, attended Sep 2022: Michaela was friendly and flexible, tailoring the session to my needs (unintended pun). The workshop area attracted shop customers, who approached for general enquiries, which could be avoided by greater signage or a cordon. Important thing is as that I left with more confidence.
  • 5/5 from Katelan May, attended Aug 2022: Michaela was brilliant she was so good with my grand daughter as she had never used or been anywhere near a sewing machine. She made my grand daughter feel relaxed and her words of encouragement were so good and explanation was brilliant so my grand daughter could understand fully what she was saying, also she repeated what to do until my grand daughter understood. Send our thanks to Michaela Thurmaston, Leicester branch. Thank you again

  • 5/5 from Razia Sheikh, attended Aug 2021: My teacher Claire was excellent. Gave instructions clearly and easy to understand. Demonstrated herself by cutting out template of an envelope cushion and sewing it. She brought from home few cushion covers for me to look at and choose which one I wanted to make. I left knowing exactly how to cut and make an envelope cushion and feel confident I should be able to do this. I think this session was good value for money and will definitely book again and also recommend.
