Whether you're looking for ways to add some vibrant art to your walls or you simply fancy learning something new, this printing workshop will introduce the ancient art of woodcut printing using a still-life arrangement to draw from.
Hosted at the iconic House for an Art Lover in Glasgow, you'll learn how to carve out your design using traditional woodcut tools, how to use the tools to simplify objects into bold shapes, suggest tone through pattern and describe finer details using lines.
You'll enjoy tailored support from your tutor throughout the class, making it the ideal way to get started in this engrossing hobby. This workshop is brilliant for beginners or if you're taking a step up from Lino printing, but will also help you brush up on your traditional drawing techniques — you'll leave the class bursting with new skills!
During the class, you'll learn:
  • Using still life arrangements to create a series of sketches to inspire your woodcut designs.
  • Transferring images to your woodblock.
  • Introduction to using woodcut tools.
  • Looking at mark making to create different textures and levels of detail.
  • Ink mixing and printing.
What you'll get

Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover offers free contemporary art in a public park, presenting a robust and diverse year-round programme of exhibitions, events, residencies, courses and public engagement opportunities that span art, design and architecture.
Designed by ZM Architecture and linked to the Victorian Walled Garden, the Studio Pavilion is a highly significant addition to House for an Art Lover in Glasgow’s Bellahouston park. Opened in 2014, it provides a space in which to present a regularly evolving and active public programme that sits alongside the House as a visitor attraction. With its innovative design enabling it to transform between exhibition space and artist’s studio, the Studio Pavilion hosts exhibitions, events and workshops with leading contemporary artists and designers.
We aim to present an ambitious, pioneering and challenging programme that is visible and relevant locally, while being nationally and internationally aware.
