Beginner's Guide to Crocheting a Granny Square

Join us in-store to discover the joys of crochet with a classic granny square project, ideal for beginners.

1.5 hours Class size 4 to 5 guests       £29

Fall in love with crochet by creating a classic granny square! You’ll be able to combine beautiful colours to stitch this traditional crochet design, perfect for setting you up for so many other projects. Granny squares can be used to make blankets, garments and more – we’re here to help you get started with your first one.

With the help of an Hobbycraft Artisan, you’ll learn how to crochet a granny square by using all the key techniques. You’ll use double and treble stitches, as well as learning how to decipher a granny square pattern and how to change yarn colours.

There’s a kit included with the workshop to give you everything you need for the project. Within the 90-minute session, you’ll be able to create one granny square, though you can continue to practice making more once you’ve got to grips with all the skills. The kit even features a pattern for a granny square blanket to help you continue your adventure in crochet!

This workshop is the perfect way to grow your crochet confidence, with tips and support from a pro! It’s ideal if you already have basic knowledge of the stitches but are looking to refresh yourself or develop further.

  • 5/5 from Deborah Toone, attended Feb 2025: Great session with Zoe. Very patient and explained techniques very well. I finished my granny square and now motivated to do more at home. Thanks very much
  • 5/5 from Mandy, attended Jan 2025: I went with my daughter and Amy, the teacher, was so patient with her. This is the 2nd class we have done at Hobbycraft and both times have been brilliant. They provided everything from the instruction sheet, wools and hook. We had a few minutes spare and Amy asked us what we really wanted to do with crocheting and she showed us how to do it. Thanks Amy!!️
  • 5/5 from Susan Steindorff, attended Feb 2024: Great class. Knowledgeable teacher who was able to give us individual attention and explain where we were going wrong. I did the beginner class a couple of months ago and have since crocheted 8 scarves
  • 4/5 from Rivka Lieberman, attended Nov 2023: Very informative course. Really caught the hang of basic double crochet. All in all, really enjoyed and am already practicing double crochet on my own.

  • 5/5 from Foluke Campbell, attended Aug 2023: The class was great time just flew by and we had the individual attention we needed. I learnt 3 stitches and was confident that wit practice I would get quicker. Thanks to Kee who was so patient and encouraging with us. It was great value for money and a better alternative to eating out for me and the girls. I would recommend this to anyone.
  • 5/5 from Clare Martin, attended Jul 2023: Amy (at the Altrincham store) was an excellent teacher, she showed us exactly what to do individually and was very encouraging. Can wait to make something using granny squares!
  • 5/5 from Karen Bennett, attended Jul 2023: Amy was great today. Very patient, took time to go at my pace and constantly checked in that I understood. She was clear, expert and very empathetic. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Definitely would recommend xx
  • 4/5 from Deanna Edwards, attended Jul 2023: Teacher was lovely, very warm and friendly. However it was clearly advertised as a beginners class but when we arrived she said some experience was required. Made it difficult for her as we were complete beginners and other student wasn’t. Perhaps make this clearer in your advertising
