5-Week Hand-Building Ceramics Class

If you've tried a pottery workshop and found yourself wanting to go further, this course is designed to take you from complete beginner to confident, independent maker.Dates of the 5 sessions: 1st, 6th, 8th, 13th, 15th Oct. 6-9pm. Please request time if you find this not suitable.Over five weekly sessions, you'll learn not just how to make ceramic pieces, but how ceramics actually work — giving you the foundation you need to continue making in an open-access studio, develop your own projects, create thoughtful handmade gifts, or introduce ceramics into your existing artistic practice.We'll start with the fundamentals: how to choose the right clay for your project, understand different clay bodies and firing temperatures, and decide which glaze and firing your work needs.You'll then learn the three essential hand-building techniques — pinching, coiling and slab building — and how to combine them to create your own forms. Along the way, we'll cover joining, handles, surface decoration, drying, preventing cracks, and other practical details that make the difference between simply making something from clay and making a successful ceramic piece.You'll also learn how to glaze your work properly, understand glaze compatibility and firing, and avoid common mistakes such as crawling, pinholes, glaze running, and poorly finished surfaces.We'll introduce the practical standards behind functional ceramics too: how to make pieces that are durable, food-safe, and suitable for selling or gifting, and what you need to consider before putting handmade ceramics into everyday use.Rather than everyone reproducing the same five objects, you'll be encouraged to experiment and gradually develop your own ideas with guidance from your tutor.By the end of the five weeks, you'll understand the complete journey from a bag of clay to a finished ceramic object — and have the knowledge to continue making independently.5 weeks · 1 session per week · Beginner friendlyYou'll finish the course with approximately 5–10 handmade, glazed, and fired ceramic pieces, alongside the skills and knowledge to begin developing your own ceramic practice.
