10 x 3 hours Location Highgate Class size 1 to 2 guests   £425

One booking covers all ten Sunday classes, from 22 November 2026 to 14 February 2027.
Learn to make ceramics using a pottery wheel, over ten Sunday mornings at Turning Earth Highgate, with Raymond Mandeville. Every session is on the wheel, with no hand-building, so you have time to repeat each technique properly before moving on. It follows our 8-week course, with more making time in between.
What you'll learn:
  • Wedging clay and studio safety
  • Centring, the first step of everything on the wheel
  • Throwing cylinders, cups and bowls
  • Trimming and foot rings
  • Pulling and attaching handles
  • Decorating with slip and sgraffito
  • Glazing, including wax resist
Your pieces are bisque fired, glazed and fired again, ready to collect two to three weeks after the course ends.
Please note: there won't be any classes on 6 December, 27 December or 3 January.
Please make sure you can attend as many of the classes as possible before you sign up. It's particularly important that you attend the first two. The classes are usually full, so we can't move people between them, add extra sessions or give refunds once the course has started.
Thank you, and happy potting!

Turning Earth's mission is to cultivate craft both as an accessible hobby and as a viable career (we offer a full-time professional studio, In Production, in Leyton). We want to contribute towards a broad adult curriculum that will improve quality of life in the city. Our members come to Turning Earth for a variety of purposes, including to:
  • Make work in ceramics
  • Learn a new skill
  • Be part of a community
  • Relax and unwind
  • Nurture creativity
  • Develop a new career
Everyone is welcome here. Beginners work alongside trained artists in a supportive community.
Turning Earth is indebted to the Arts and Crafts movement at the beginning of the 20th century, which suggested that there should be no separation between utility and art. Our vision rests in the intuited feeling that we will naturally make life more beautiful when we take our aesthetic awareness, our right-brained feeling for things, as seriously as we take our rational understanding of the world.
We exist to enable people to make beautiful physical objects, and in doing so, to make their lives more beautiful: more centered, more fulfilled, more present to what they truly care about. We feel that in making this movement, we are encouraging a broader social shift towards living with care in our world.
