Using pyrography tools, decorate a wooden slice with a beautiful festive penguin family! You’ll be able to add lots of seasonal details to bring the scene to life.

Whether you’ve tried your hand at pyrography before or you’re new to the craft, this is a great opportunity to master the wood burning tool! You can try out the technique, practise making burn marks and lines on wooden tags, then use a template to create a beautiful design for the sign.

The Hobbycraft Artisan will be on hand with tips and tricks, guiding you along as you bring this project to life. Pyrography is a great way to expand your crafting repertoire and if you’ve got a knack for other artistic techniques, you’ll probably pick this skill up in no time.

There’s no need to feel rushed when working on your piece. You won’t be able to complete the full project within the hour, so you may wish to focus on certain sections during the workshop to get started. You’ll pick up the skills to complete the design in your own time.

  *Price includes £3 delivery.

Your class will take place on Zoom, our online workshop platform. There’s no need to download anything—simply click the link provided in your booking confirmation to join the session at the scheduled time.

You’ll be sent a follow-up video after your workshop, which will be live for 12 months afterwards to guide you in your own time.

This workshop is also available as a private workshop for group bookings of 8+.

Recent reviews of Penguin Christmas Pyrography Wooden Slice Class

  • 5/5 from Alana Kinkaid, attended Dec 2025: the class was fantastic. Gisela explained everything very well and was super encouraging! I was a little nervous about it beforehand, but Gisela put me right at ease and walked us through all safety procedures too.
  • 5/5 from Wendy, attended Dec 2025: This was my second pyrography class with hobbycraft, lots of great tips on how to create a very christmasy penguin scene.
  • 5/5 from Tonya, attended Dec 2025: I loved the workshop. The teacher was well informed & explained everything very well. Even though we didn’t use all the tips, she went over how we would use each one which was quite helpful. I highly recommend this workshop if you want to get a start with pyrography.
  • 5/5 from Caroline Banfield, attended Dec 2025: Workshop was great. Gisela gave us many tips on technique and was patient, and very encouraging. I did the same workshop last Christmas and was struggling with some of the “knacks” to this craft, but with this extra class, i think i feel more confident now. Well worth doing both Workshops. Both five star.*****
  • 5/5 from Carole Heyes, attended Dec 2025: Really enjoyed this insight into pyrography. Had not done it before and our workshop instructor gave lots of hints and tips to help us
  • 5/5 from Laura Steel, attended Dec 2025: Great class, really helpful instructor who took us through all the steps. Only negative was that we didn't get the penguin template in advance of the class, but the instructor explained how to draw it freehand which was very helpful.
  • 5/5 from Emily Morris, attended Dec 2025: Course was really good, and it was very easy to follow. I would definitely recommend if you’ve been thinking about Pyrography. The person running it was lovely too!
  • 3/5 from Sophie Cosford, attended Dec 2025: Ordered kit which only arrived the Wednesday before the class and only received tracking because we chased as concerned that we hadn't received kit. Template for penguin was missing from kit so had to try and draw it freehand which not being very artistic was an impossible ask. Quality of pyrography tool was poor, it got very hot - it would have been good to have an option to purchase a better quality tool. Session went ok but was difficult to see demonstration due to distance between camera and craft. Overall I would rather do an on site class than an online one going forward.
  • 3/5 from Eileen Trenchard, attended Dec 2025: The penguin template had not been sent to participants, so a lot of time was used up by having to hand-draw the design onto the wood slice. Had we been able to use the template, this part of the craft would have taken a lot less time. There was not enough time available for participants to practice making marks on the wooden tags before having to start on the wood slice. We ran out of time and had to complete our designs after the class had finished and we no longer had a picture in front of us of what the end result should look roughly like. It would have been nice if, instead of running out of time, we could have had time at the end of the class to see what everybody had done and for Q and A session. That said, the teacher was lovely and encouraging.
  • 5/5 from Natalie Millward, attended Nov 2025: Really enjoyed this class, it was very informative and a craft I very much enjoyed. Tutor was excellent and made sure we were all on track and gave us the time to practice. Picture is how far I got during the class. Can’t wait to finish it!
  • 5/5 from Sue Brindley, attended Nov 2025: Really enjoyed this Class. It was a good introduction into the world of Pyrography. Lots of great guidance and tips. I was quite pleased with end result considering I was complete beginner. Can't wait to do more.
  • 5/5 from Hermione Salter, attended Nov 2025: I had a lot of fun as always, a very peaceful craft to get on with without needing to be too fast paced. I really like that these now have the option of getting just the class without the kit as I already have so many pyrography tools! The template gets emailed out so you can print it out in advance.
  • 5/5 from Leanne, attended Nov 2025: Thoroughly enjoyed the class with a very personable teacher and I'm very pleased with the result
  • 5/5 from Melanie, attended Nov 2025: Really enjoyed this well-paced on-line class - Gisela, the tutor, provided excellent demonstrations throughout the workshop of the use of the supplied equipment. She gave lots of tips for our work and ensured that we understood the safety aspects of burning into wood to achieve the lovely Penguin design. The picture was largely completed by the end of the on-line class but I had purchased a larger woodslice from Hobbycraft so I can add more to the picture later - I intend to varnish it when completely finished to use in my kitchen. More pyrography workshops please!
  • 5/5 from Tracey Winsor, attended Nov 2025: Really great session. Fabulous instructor, who gave clear instructions and lots of encouragement. Very happy with result.

  • 5/5 from Rubin Carter, attended Nov 2025: Excellent kit. Contained plenty of wooden tags to pratice pyrography on. The teacher was easy to understand. We were taught many different techniques such as how to do outlines and shade the penguins in using different parts of the pyrography tool. I would recommend this class.
  • 5/5 from Elizabeth Hill, attended Nov 2025: Fab creative session with all the equipment, techniques and guidance to start creating! I really enjoyed learning and the artisan was very clear, friendly, patient, artistic and professional. I thoroughly recommend this creative taster in Pyrography, what a brilliant time we all had.
  • 5/5 from Yvonne, attended Nov 2025: Enjoyed the class a great deal. Three techniques using the tool were demonstrated and we had the opportunity to try them out. Workshop was great value without the need to purchase the kit as I already had everything required and the template was emailed over to me in plenty of time to get it printed out which was great. Thanks very much.

  • 5/5 from Mrs Kim Melville, attended Nov 2025: I had a very enjoyable class learning how to use pyrography tool as I purchased the kit from Hobbycraft a few months ago and had been very nervous about using it. Gisela has given me the confidence to progress and keep practising this art. she was very informative and the time just flew by. Thank you so much
  • 5/5 from Edith, attended Nov 2025: Excellent workshop, really enjoyed it. The artisan was extremely well helpful, loads of tips on using the wood burning tool. She was also friendly and pleasant to watch, listen and learn from.
  • 5/5 from Meghan Smith, attended Nov 2025: Fantastic class, friendly and the teacher was very knowledgable. I can't wait to book onto another!
  • 5/5 from Sheila Forde, attended Nov 2025: Really enjoyed it. The box contained everything we needed and it was good to be able to ask questions as I am a beginner. My daughters and I did it together and it was fun.
  • 5/5 from Sharon Watson, attended Nov 2025: Really lovely teacher. Good class for beginners. Was shown the basics to have a go. The class time went really quickly though.
  • 5/5 from Anne Crosby, attended Nov 2025: I have really enjoyed this workshop. It was easy to follow the instructions and the tutorial was friendly and encouraging. Will definitely try some more projects using this method.
  • 5/5 from Ella Dockerty, attended Nov 2025: Very informative and showed lots of different techniques and explained safety and parts of tools in detail. Really fun. Would highly recommend.
  • 5/5 from Catherine Saffery, attended Nov 2025: Despite Gisella being really poorly she gave us an amazing tutorial. Her instructions and demonstrations were clear and well suited to a beginner class. She made me want to learn more.
  • 4/5 from Vicky Dutchburn, attended Nov 2025: Great introduction Time flew by Practiced on the tags to build up confidence to do the larger piece
  • 4/5 from Rachel Staniforth, attended Nov 2025: Very enjoyable course. The tutor was excellent at explaining techniques and safety precautions. It's a shame that the course is only 1 hour long, as I would have liked the chance to be shown how to use all the additional wood burning attachments. The video we received after the course was not of our session, and was quite disappointing as it did not go into as much detail
  • 3/5 from Emma Browne, attended Nov 2025: There were problems as quite few people hadn't been sent the correct kit. This meant the instructor had to spend 10 mins of a 1 hr lesson trying to sort this out. Also the templates weren't sent until just before the lesson so I couldn't get them printed out.
  • 3/5 from Nicola Bower, attended Nov 2025: My kit didn't arrive in time for the class so I had to make do with what I had, sharing with my friend. Chrissie is lovely and very welcoming. She did give us some very useful tips but she went a bit too fast. She showed a technique and then I missed the next one while I was having a go at the previous one. This design would've fitted better into a 2 hour session; it took a further hour to finish the piece. It does help that we have been sent a recorded session.
  • 5/5 from Elaine Clohessy, attended Dec 2024: Really fun class - the perfect thing for Christmas! Emma explained and showed us the techniques really well, and it was great to get all the links via email. This was my first Hobbycraft workshop and I am ready thinking about my next one.
  • 5/5 from Carol, attended Dec 2024: Well worth doing, though I didn't complete the project I have a video to go over the techniques again and again
  • 5/5 from Harriet Bickley, attended Dec 2024: Great, good description of what to do, easy to see what the tutor was doing. Good value class. Only downside was the piece of wood sent had a crack in it and some of the bark had come off which was a shame.
  • 5/5 from Juliet, attended Dec 2024: I really enjoyed this lesson. My snowman looked a little odd and too long but no reflection on the teaching, just user error! I will enjoy going back over the video to see where I can attempt to improve my technique
  • 5/5 from Sue Bartholomew, attended Dec 2024: Really good and very intense for an hour. I liked to idea of using basic shapes ie triangles and circles which is very helpful for those who can't draw. It made it very accessible for all. I can't see where it mentioned that pencils would be needed - but i might have just missed that so we did have to hunt the pencils in an office full of pens but we got there. Thank you so much we all so enjoyed it.
  • 5/5 from Justina Quarm, attended Dec 2024: We had a lot of fun and enjoyed being able to rewatch the video after the session had finished.
  • 5/5 from Jane Harbour, attended Dec 2024: Really enjoyed the class, I have never done this before and I thought the instruction for safety and use were really clear Looking forward to practicing Thank you so much
  • 5/5 from Debra, attended Dec 2024: Excellent class with a skilled teacher. I was totally new to pyrography but came away feeling well equipped to work on my own projects. The tool in the kit worked well.

  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Dec 2024: Great workshop as always. Really enjoyed it. Host Irene was lovely. Friendly and helpful. Christmassy.
  • 5/5 from Carol Boswell, attended Dec 2024: The equipment was great and arrived on time. The class tutor was very professional. She ensures we all knew what we were doing from the safety aspects through to the finished work.’ I have had a few hobby craft classes now and I would definitely rate this tutor as the best.
  • 5/5 from Lynda Smith, attended Dec 2024: Great course really learnt alot. Very clear instruction from the tutor. Would recommend this course for a beginner
  • 3/5 from Angela Howes, attended Dec 2024: Topic a bit complex, for first go at new skill. I am left handed so have to switch instructions.
