Introduction

Introduction

I'll draw on my experience of working in museums and galleries, and alongside conservators, to teach you a little bit about this ancient art form.

Choose your shapes

Choose Your Shapes

There will be a range of wooden shapes to choose from - they make excellent baubles for the tree or are simply beautiful catching the light on these darker days.

Gilding

I'll talk you through the process step by step. You'll work with adhesives and different brushes to achieve the desired effect.

Experimentation

Experimentation

Once you've finished your wooden shape you'll have the chance to experiment with different shapes and textures - make a gorgeous golden shell or bring your own trinket!

Join me in this delightful introduction to gilding workshop. You will embark on a creative journey into the elegant world of gilding. Learn the enchanting art of applying gold leaves to various surfaces as you craft a stunning piece to adorn your home. No prior experience is needed, as you will be guided through each step with patience and experience.
During the workshop, you will become acquainted with the different tools and techniques involved in the gilding process. Working with delicate imitation gold leaf, you will experience a sense of calm and accomplishment as you transform ordinary objects into shimmering masterpieces.
We'll start with gilding a wooden shape, from flowers to celestial shapes - perfect gifts, decorations, or just adding some light to the gloomy days. I'll talk you through the process, the materials, and the ways in which you can incorporate gilding into other art practices.
Once you've got to grips with the process, you'll be able to experiment with different textures. I'll provide a gorgeous selection of shells for you to play with, or you are welcome to bring your own small trinket to turn to gold - some of my favourites include Lego bricks and dried leaves.
By the end of the session, you will take home not only a beautiful gilded creation but also a newfound appreciation for this mesmerising craft. A perfect combination of creativity, learning, and joy in this gilding activity.
I'll be hosting this session at Something Good Workshops in Deptford. There will be a range of hot drinks and alcoholic refreshments for sale at their bar so you can make your experience even more magical!

I am Lucy-Anne, an experienced Museum professional, & freelance creative workshop tutor, latterly for the National Maritime Museum (Royal Museums Greenwich). I’ve increasingly specialised in explaining the Art of gilding decorations (including workshops on the Cutty Sark) to bring the surprise, delight & pride of working with gold leaf to members of public of all ages. I relish linking accessible crafting activities to making historical connections to trades of original professional craftspeople, as well as Museum Conservators today who utilise the same professional skills alongside their research to conserve museum collections.
My childhood was filled with art & crafts as well as a deep love for animals, plants & nature. I studied Ecology & Nature conservation at degree level, & my first job was as an Ethnobotanist at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew researching plant uses, including food, medicine & as materials for crafting.
From there I worked for 15 years at the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill. (I experienced a wide range of museum professional work within most departments from curation to object care). My passion is thinking holistically with linking environmental & sustainability education, alongside culture & creativity. My highlight was curating an Environmental gallery linking the science of Natural History to the art of Anthropology & looking at planetary sustainability, by linking the Museum collections, & the Horniman Gardens & Nature Trail with global & urban wildlife conservation & green roofs within London.
I am also an artist & love doing paintings & sketches within the themes I’m passionate about, including kitchen art! Other freelance activities have included working as a freelance art & gardening tutor on an organic farm, & for the Geffrye Museum (now Museum of the Home), & as an artist tutor at Dulwich Picture Gallery.
I have also taken my gilding workshops into the community within my local Women’s Institute, as well for members of a creative mindfulness retreat, & would be delighted to share further the sheer joy & awe of working with gold leaf & experiencing its extraordinary strength as well as delicacy & long lasting satisfaction!
