Beginner artists can master the art of sketching with this introductory class. Learn sketching techniques you can replicate with any animals and wildlife to expand your artistic skillset.

During this class, you’ll learn how to trace a template using a graphite transfer method. You’ll then use the variation of graphite density in the pencils to add light, shade and a fur texture, perfect for giving your work realistic details that bring it to life.

The Hobbycraft Artisan leading your class will take you through each step, with everything you need included in the craft kit should you choose to purchase it. They will also share excellent tips and tricks along the way.

You may not finish the piece during the two-hour session, but you’ll have all the skills you need to continue it in your own time, as well as a video to guide you.

You’ll be sent a follow-up video which will be live for 12 months afterwards to guide you in your own time.

This class is also available as a private class for group bookings of 8+.

*Price includes £3 delivery.

  • 5/5 from Tanya Warwick-Abil, attended Oct 2026: I really enjoyed spending a couple of hours sketching. In a busy life, I find it hard to carve out time to draw so it felt so relaxing. Arene was very lovely and I hope to do some more workshops with them
  • 5/5 from Tamsyn Moreton-Trayler, attended Sep 2026: We very much enjoyed our wildlife sketching class (badger). The instructor kept making sure we were ok and had plenty of opportunities for asking questions about what she was doing, if we needed it, but as she was very clear and concise with everything she instructed us, we had no need to ask anything. Approximately one hour before the class she sent us an email containing 3 printable pictures that were useful for the class.
  • 5/5 from Anne Frances Newton, attended Sep 2026: irene was a great gave excellent comments on sketching badgers thank you Irene a must do workshop
  • 4/5 from Tracy Louise Dixon, attended Sep 2026: I enjoyed this badger sketch immensely but I found accessing the Zoom class very difficult. I could see and hear but I couldn't communicate with the teacher. I would do this again as I feel I learned so much about pencils and looking at images. I think the class would benefit from the pictures being made available earlier as there was a presumption that we would be able to print out the image. I will do so at work but would have felt less fraught if it had been made available last week. Thankyou however, for an enjoyable experience.
  • 5/5 from Cheryl Gillespie, attended Aug 2026: Emma is a really good, experienced tutor who discussed and demonstrated a variety of drawing/sketching skills and techniques throughout the session. Many thanks.
  • 5/5 from Leanne Metcalfe, attended Aug 2026: Emma was a brilliant teacher, she gave great tips and advice. I would definitely do another class and would highly recommend if you are a beginner.
  • 5/5 from Sara Newport, attended Aug 2026: I had a really enjoyable couple of hours. The tutor was very good and easy to follow. The time went very quickly and I am a bit slow, so didn’t finish. But I have the confidence to finish it on my own following her demonstration
  • 5/5 from Alyss, attended Jul 2026: It was a great experience which I really enjoyed. I learnt many new techniques and everyone was really nice. It helped me to create a piece of artwork I was really pleased with. I would recommend to anyone.
  • 5/5 from Wendy Howard, attended Jul 2026: I've been sketching for many years now but had to stop and haven't had much opportunity recently to restart. I had a complete reverse right shoulder replacement last November and I really needed to check what I can and can't do. Your classes are excellent, you work at a pace easily followed by beginners and in small enough steps not to feel rushed. The techniques and materials and tools you use also adds to an artists understanding of how to obtain the best results. I have done 2 of the classes of sketching wildlife and have signed up for a watercolour class as well. Now I've started sketching again, I doubt I will be able to stop. Thank you!
  • 5/5 from Janice Bannister, attended Jul 2026: Loved it, maybe just send the finished reference pic with the template. Very interesting and well presented course course
  • 3/5 from Lynda Smith, attended Jul 2026: The zoom course was OK the following video is different from the zoom one. Really disappointed with the course amd the downloads
  • 5/5 from Sally Fox, attended Jun 2026: Really enjoyed the sketching workshop. It was all done at a nice pace so you didn’t feel rushed and all the instructions were very clear. I felt like I learnt a lot. My first attempt and I was really pleased with the finished project. The 2 hours went very quickly.
  • 5/5 from Jordan Green, attended Jun 2026: Good instructor. Good tools. Lasted the right amount of time to not feel rushed or get bored. I'm very happy with my fox!
  • 5/5 from Wendy Howard, attended Jun 2026: I thoroughly enjoyed this class. It allowed me to try other ways of creating artwork as I tend you use a grid which doesn't allow much opportunity to experiment be more creative and less rigid in the way I work. A charming presenter, clear, concise and informative. Excellent!!!
  • 5/5 from Sarah Owen, attended Jun 2026: Great class. Interesting to hear about the difference of pencils to use. Would recommend the course.
  • 5/5 from Annabel Rajgor, attended Jun 2026: Host was fantastic, I learnt alot as a beginner. Will definitely do another in the future
  • 5/5 from Angela Gaunt, attended Jun 2026: A great step by step session. Really enjoyed it and I’m pleased with my picture. I didn’t want the session to end. Only one improvement would be to have the instruction to print the template a few days before or at the time of booking. There were other ways to work around it but it would have been easier with the print out.
  • 4/5 from Lavinia Walker, attended Jun 2026: Overall this course was very informative with it introducing us to the different pencils and how to use them to emphasis certain markings over others, however it took me longer then the tutor to colour the back of my template so I got too behind to continue the class and am now reliant on the receording. Also, I only received the template the day of the class by email. I missed it as I had other email reminders of the course taking place at the same time. For future attendees I would recommend you print off the template and shade the back of it with pencil before the class. so that it's ready for when you need it.
  • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Jun 2026: A useful introduction to pencils & tools. And a simple method on how to start a drawing which can sometimes be daunting when you've got a blank piece of paper.
  • 5/5 from Silvia Vitiello, attended May 2026: Brilliant drawing session - completely engaged for the full 2 hours - a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
  • 5/5 from Marie Dunnell-Tubb, attended May 2026: I had such a wonderful couple of hours learning different techniques to help with my drawing. Emma was a fantastic teacher, clear, knowledgeable, and very engaging. I learnt about the best tools to use for the most desired outcome and different techniques to bring my drawing to life. I’m very happy with the finished result and will continue to work on what I’ve learnt. Emma also sent through an email after the session with links to help with future projects.
  • 5/5 from Silvia Vitiello, attended May 2026: Loved this class … learned new techniques and ideas for pencil drawings! A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
  • 5/5 from Fiona, attended May 2026: Emma the artisan gave really clear instructions. She explained and demonstrated how to use the different tools in the kit. In previous classes this had not been demonstrated. With thanks to her techniques I feel that the fur on my badger looks more realistic than on any other sketches I have done.
  • 5/5 from Christina Smith, attended May 2026: Really enjoyed the Wildlife Sketch class, it was the Stag Stretch. It was explain very well in what pencils were best for what technic. Two hours gave you plenty of time to complete it was useful to have the templates via email before the workshop for a guide. Every step was explain well. Very happy with the results of sketch of a Stag
  • 5/5 from Anne Clark, attended May 2026: Excellent class thank you. Everything explained clearly and in detail. Harder than you think. Tutor very pleasant and helpful.
  • 5/5 from Heather Wansbrough-Jones, attended May 2026: Excellent teaching and fun to do. Too much information for a beginner but as I have the video that's not a problem. Clear instructions. A bit fast for a beginner but not a problem as I can repeat the whole thing. Immediate response when I couldn't fine the Zoom link.
  • 5/5 from Anne Clark, attended May 2026: Tutor very informative with friendly knowledgeable approach. Wildlife good topics. Have done two other Wildlife classes and enjoyed them and learntxa lot.
  • 5/5 from Trudy Webster, attended May 2026: Fantastic class, Emma was great. Everything was explained so well and the guidance was easy to follow.

  • 5/5 from Cath Cole, attended May 2026: This is my 2nd sketch class. I loved drawing the stag. Lovely Clear instructions and I found the lesson about the pencil types so helpful. Can't wait to try another class. Thank you
  • 5/5 from Lynda Broad, attended May 2026: A very informative and easy going class. I received a template of the fox earlier in the day. Emma went through how to transfer template to the art paper, all the different pencils and kit that we would be using in the class. Loads more hints and tips during the class too.
  • 5/5 from Beverly, attended May 2026: The tutor was very good and let students take their time tracing down. She made it clear that we should not rush and would be able to finish our drawing in our own time using the recording. I finished mine at my local art group this morning and am pleased with it but may add a little more shading.
  • 5/5 from Moira Ruby Bostanci, attended May 2026: I really enjoyed the stag drawing, Gisela was friendly and encouraging and I was very pleased with the results and will draw it again when I get the video recording.
  • 4/5 from Sharon Powls, attended Apr 2026: There was a bit of a mix up at the beginning as the email we received the day before was supposed to include a template which it didn’t so we had to wait for that to be sent and then print it off which meant it wasn’t quite a relaxing start. It could maybe have done with starting a little later for me as it was rushed from work but the tutor was good and did a lot of explaining
  • 4/5 from Fiona, attended Apr 2026: This was the first time I have done any sketching. I found the class to be at a good pace. Each step was clearly explained. We were able to ask any questions. I only received the template less than two hours before the class. As I don’t have a printer I had a stressful time trying to sort out printing it in such a short period of time. I felt I had been rushing and it took me longer to relax during the class than usual. Could the template be sent out further in advance such as with the zoom link or with booking confirmation?
  • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Apr 2026: I enjoyed the class and was happy with my end picture. It was a little difficult to follow along as the artist was very quick.
  • 3/5 from Jenny, attended Apr 2026: The class was fine, lots of information and I was quite pleased with my result. But you really do need a printer to get the shape and copy. I spent a lot of time free drawing this before hand. If it’s not accurate it’s not so easy to follow the class. A warning about having access to a printer should be given on booking.
  • 5/5 from Yvonne, attended Mar 2026: Enjoyed the workshop and I am pleased with the sketch that I have created. I received the template in a good amount of time to print it. The class went at a good pace and I was able to complete my sketch within the time. Great to have the video and templates sent over after the class.
  • 5/5 from Yvonne, attended Mar 2026: Class was cancelled twice but very happy it went ahead today and many thanks to Gisela for covering the class. It was very relaxing and well paced with no need to rush. Enjoyed layering the pencils and creating a more realistic badger with each layer. Had the template in plenty of time to print which was excellent. Super value with the discount and no need to buy the kit.
  • 5/5 from Karen Stephens, attended Mar 2026: I really enjoyed the class. Gisela is a great teacher. She went at a good pace so I felt that the length of the class was perfect. I was able to finish in the time and was very pleased with my badger drawing.
  • 5/5 from Hermione, attended Feb 2026: Excellent class as always, I had a great time just switching my brain off and crafting along. I'm so happy with the sketch I produced
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Feb 2026: Lovely workshop, good pace and not too complicated! Good sketching tips too. Be nice to have transfer in advance so I can print it. Tutor was great and really clear. Thank you ️
  • 5/5 from Emma Goddard, attended Feb 2026: Really enjoyed this class. Clear instructions at a good pace. Made it simple and straightforward to complete the badger.
  • 5/5 from Evon Wheeler, attended Feb 2026: Really enjoyed the class I found it really relaxing to do and the Tutor was helpful and informative
  • 5/5 from Edith Low, attended Feb 2026: Excellent workshop. Artisan was explainer each step very well. Lovely and pleasant, gave us a lot of information about sketching. A most enjoyable workshop. Thank you.
  • 5/5 from Lisa Harrison, attended Feb 2026: Thank you for another wonderful informative class really enjoyed myself highly recommend any of there classes
  • 5/5 from Evon Wheeler, attended Feb 2026: Really enjoyed the class with Gisela. Easy to follow along. Helpful to get the video afterwards too.
  • 5/5 from Pam Dixon, attended Feb 2026: very enjoyable and informative done at a nice speed and very gentle lesson thank you
  • 4/5 from Yvonne, attended Feb 2026: I really enjoyed sketching the squirrel and it was good to revisit the different sketching pencils and techniques. The time went really quickly. It would be a bit more helpful if the template could be sent out earlier on to give me time to print it out as I don't have a printer and it only came through an hour or so before the class.
  • 4/5 from Yvonne, attended Feb 2026: I enjoyed the class and learnt some new techniques for creating animal fur. The two hours went by quickly. It is good value without having to purchase the kit but i have taken one star off as i don't have a printer and the template arrived by email on the day which meant I wasn't able to get it printed so I had to draw the stag freehand - this was frustrating as the first part of the class is about transferring the printed template onto the paper. It would be much more helpful to have the template sent at the point of booking the class or at least 24 hours before it starts so I can sort out getting it printed.
