Transform your home, adding a unique, personal touch! There’s no better way to bring handmade detail into your décor than with stunning French knitted letters and motifs. This fun technique is a great way to put your own spin on classic sentiments.

The workshop will introduce you to the art of French knitting, breaking the project down step by step so that you can follow along at home. Guided by a Hobbycraft Artisan, you’ll learn how to thread wire and twist it to create unique lettering and shapes.

You’ll have the materials you need to make your French knitted decoration included in the craft kit, as well as a template of four different words to inspire your project. Each maker will be able to create one French knitted word during the workshop.

Once complete, your charming decoration will be ready to put on display!

You’ll be sent a follow-up video which will be live for 12 months afterwards to guide you in your own time.

This workshop is also available as a private workshop for group bookings of 5+.

*Price includes £3 delivery.

  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Jul 2026: As ever Gisela was very patient in ex-plainibng each step in detail and how to create different designs. The video sent after the event is always useful for reference.
  • 5/5 from Rebecca, attended Jun 2026: I enjoyed this class, Christie explained clearly how to French knit and make words with our knitting.
  • 5/5 from Katie Cragg, attended Jun 2026: Gisela was really pleasant and gave really simple instructions. I wasn't a total newbie to knitting as my grandma taught me when I was a kid…30 years ago, but I really felt like she made it easier. Great beginners course.
  • 5/5 from Lauren, attended Jun 2026: Fantastic! Great workshop, Gisela is so clear and concise teaching exactly how to do this, can’t wait to get making more
  • 5/5 from Rachael, attended Mar 2026: It was a very fun and absorbing session. Thoroughly worthwhile. Chrissie was an excellent teacher. I look forward to working on some other words.
  • 5/5 from Corrin Mason, attended Mar 2026: Great class with a patient and knowledgeable instructor. Looking forward to making other things with my ‘chains’. Thank you
  • 5/5 from Sheila, attended Mar 2026: Teacher friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable with lots of useful additional tips. Really like getting the video to be able to watch again as I went a bit wrong during the actual demo and being able to re-watch at your leisure means you are able to achieve the finished result. I have done quite a few classes both in-store and on-line and have enjoyed all of them. When it is on-line it is very exciting receiving your parcel in the post beforehand with all the items you will need for the class which are always very generous, very practical as well when you are trying a new craft to have everything you will need.
  • 5/5 from Hawwa, attended Feb 2026: This class was so fun! The teacher was so lovely and explained things clearly. It was nicely interactive despite being online. My daughter has had so much fun french knitting this week since the class!

  • 5/5 from Linda Mills, attended Feb 2026: Really great tutor. Explained everything clearly and was happy to repeat if I didn’t understand.

  • 5/5 from Cathy Shakespeare, attended Jan 2026: Gisela was lovely and made everything seem very easy. Clear instructions and great interaction throughout the class. It was great that we didn’t have to speak at all and could just enjoy the time, interacting via chat when we needed to. She also had the most beautiful nails!
  • 5/5 from Laura Gibb, attended Jan 2026: Fantastic. I used to French knit yea4s ago and found it very therapeutic. I just couldn't remember how to start it off, or how to finish it. Also, I never made it into anything before, so this has given me some ideas. Thank you Giselle.
  • 5/5 from Jayne Follows, attended Jan 2026: Ablew to take it at my own pace and ask questions. Very informative. Enjoyed workshop
  • 4/5 from Carol Easton, attended Jan 2026: It was great to relive my childhood and also learn to make my long tails into words rather than snakes or coasters
  • 4/5 from Samantha Mallin, attended Jan 2026: The class tutor was great, friendly and helpful hence 4 stars. Would mark lower stars for the items provided. The knitting doll was really bad quality with splinters inside that affect the wool as you move it through. Something like this shouldn’t be sent out when you have 1 hr to make something, just read the reviews for the knitting doll on the hobby craft website- very poor
  • 5/5 from Lena Gamblin, attended Aug 2025: Chrissie was a great teacher, very clear and patient! Happy to repeat when required, providing very clear and easy to understand instructions. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and I’m looking forward to finishing the project at home.

  • 5/5 from Helen Dartnell, attended Jul 2025: Another lovely evening crafting thanks to Hobbycraft. I haven't done French knitting since I was a kid and always wondered what to do with the miles of stuff I created. Now I know and I'm ready to fill my world with wire filled words! The workshop was very good with easy instructions. Chrissie is very good at passing on her knowledge in a clear and fun way. My only tip would be to have some metal clippers handy. My scissors wouldn't cut the wire at all.
  • 5/5 from Anna, attended Jul 2025: i loved the class. it was a great introduction and Chrissie was a great teacher.
  • 5/5 from Esme Bravo, attended Jun 2025: Was great! Very friendly and helpful and made very good progress.

  • 5/5 from Jeanette, attended May 2025: Great workshop, really fun craft once you get the hang of the doll! (it took me a few attempts) our host was Chrissie and she was great, she explained everything clearly and checked in to see how we were getting on. The kit has everything you need to make a few words in 2 different colours, would definitely recommend.
  • 5/5 from Kathleen Hale, attended May 2025: Really enjoyed this. Chrissie is brilliant and explains everything really well. It was a great workshop.Looking forward to doing another workshop soon

  • 5/5 from Helen Forbes, attended Mar 2025: The wool slits sometimes. Apart from that, delighted with the course. Lovely teacher. Very clear.
  • 5/5 from Jill Hollick, attended Mar 2025: I thoroughly enjoyed the process even though we did not finish we know how to by the demonstration. Looking forward to completing mine and trying more
  • 5/5 from Jo Canham, attended Mar 2025: I really loved it and I’m excited at the progress that I made in that short time and I already have a project that I want to do as a wedding gift for someone. The information given was the prefect speed and the fact that there is a video too means that I have something to refer back to if I need it.
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Mar 2025: Great class easy to access on zoom lovely helpful teacher thanks Irene great kit delivered in plenty time for the session.
  • 5/5 from Alice Boulding, attended Mar 2025: The lady was good at explaining and the craft was fun. The kit sent home had loads of wool to make many more projects at home.
  • 4/5 from Nichole, attended Mar 2025: Brilliantly done class but I feel that it was a to long practical and whilst concentrating on what we were doing before we even got the rope through the end she was finishing off. That’s absolutely fine I knew we wouldn’t finish the whole task in the 1hr time slot but we couldn’t concentrate quick enough to watch the ending of it, the taking off the dolly and tieing off before she was putting it on the wire. Maybe having a few other prepped ones to be able to show 2/3 times live so we can ask questions may be better for next time. She was super lovely, calming voice and reassuring throughout, was just the ending that was a little off putting for the 5th star. But the host definitely 10/10
  • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Mar 2025: Really liked the instructor on the call. Very clear and easy to follow. However, the video recording sent after the call was not very good quality and not as good as the instructor’s session.
  • 5/5 from Terrie-Lea Turner, attended Feb 2025: Loved the online class. Very informative and great demonstrations. Loved being able to join in at the same time.
  • 5/5 from Danila, attended Feb 2025: Chrissie explained everything very clearly from the start and went through things again when needed. I got inspired by some of the ideas that Chrissie suggested as projects for after the workshop.
  • 5/5 from Helen, attended Feb 2025: Really nice to rediscover this technique and how to use the wire to create words and shapes. Easy to follow along
  • 4/5 from Gemma Royall, attended Feb 2025: I did enjoy the class and found the initial steps easy to follow, however there wasn’t enough time for us to complete the craft and therefore it was difficult to follow and understand how to take the knit off the Dolly and complete the final steps. It would have been good to have maybe a 15 minute follow up a week or so later to recap on the final steps as it’s much easier to ask questions face to face
  • 5/5 from Janet McVeigh, attended Jan 2025: We had a very enthusiastic encouraging tutor who got us started on the French knitting. After the class we were able to complete the words. Look forward to doing more
  • 5/5 from Paula Van-Bloor, attended Jan 2025: Very easy to follow and Gisela was lovely. Went far too quickly! So must have been having fun.
  • 5/5 from Penny Caselberg, attended Jan 2025: Another fabulous class with Chrissie. Thank you! Such good fun and a reminder of using the little French dolly as a child but this time with purpose. It does feel much harder as an adult to do ha ha ha. I can't wait to experiment.
  • 5/5 from Tina Holland, attended Jan 2025: I thought the course was very good value for the money. As the items sent give you opportunity to make quite a few words. The quality of the products sent were very good as well. Unfortunately being online in a group isn’t my thing and I would have preferred one to one or an in person group. The tutor was lovely, everything was explained clearly and I did enjoy the hour tutorial.
