I’m Patrick Astwood - an artist and surface-pattern designer, best known for bold wallpapers and bespoke lampshades that bring a room to life.
My creative path hasn’t been a straight line (which is exactly why I love encouraging others to give things a go). I’ve moved from the civil service into film and creative production, and eventually into design, where I found my artistic groove by experimenting, trusting my eye, and learning through making. Along the way, I discovered just how powerful it is to create something tangible with your own hands.
Lampshades became my obsession because they’re the perfect mix of pattern, colour, and atmosphere. A lampshade isn’t just a finishing touch - it literally changes the light in a space. The same fabric can feel warm and cosy, or crisp and dramatic, depending on shape, lining, and how you build it. And when you switch the lamp on and your work glows back at you… it’s a little bit magic.
I’m now turning my focus to teaching because I’m genuinely excited to share what I’ve learned and help others discover how achievable (and addictive!) this craft can be. I remember how intimidating it can feel to start something new, so my aim is to make classes relaxed, friendly and confidence-boosting - practical skills, clear steps, and plenty of encouragement.
When I’m not in the studio, I also run New Icons Design, where I explore creative ideas across design and technology - but making things by hand is where I really recharge and reconnect with why I fell in love with creativity in the first place. If you’ve ever wanted to learn a new skill, make something beautiful for your home, and surprise yourself with what you can do, I’d love to welcome you to one of my classes.
