Annie King Jewellery

With a deep love of craftsmanship and nature, it's no surprise that artist and jewellery maker Annie King finds most of the inspiration for her work in the natural world. She launched her fine jewellery brand in 2020, creating exquisite pieces based around the textures and patterns of flora and fauna, and now shares her craft with others from her cosy studio in Glasgow. 

If you had to describe your class in three words, what would they be?

Relaxed, freeing and joyful.

What's the vibe in your studio? Is it social and chatty, or are people more focused on the tools and process?

There is a perfect balance of social and chatty, and focus – the best of both worlds!

Do you get many people coming in groups for special occasions, or is it more creatives looking for a new adventure? 

Mostly its people looking for a new creative experience. During the summer time a lot of people visiting Scotland take part – a silver ring that you can have posted back to you is the perfect memory of a European trip!

What makes a jewellery class such a refreshing alternative to standard drinks or dinner catch-ups with friends?

It's something different isn't it? Plus, you get a piece of jewellery you've designed at the end.

Are people more worried about not being creative enough, or the jewellery making process itself? How do you reassure them?

People tend to be worried about the drawing I ask them to do of their ring at the beginning. I explain that we need to have a direction in mind, and once the carving begins everyone settles in. I'm always on hand to help with instructions and assist visually as well – I think that helps reassure people.

What's the most memorable or ambitious thing someone has ever made in one of your classes?

Once upon a time, a lovely lady made a signet ring with little woodlice dancing over the top - it was impeccably detailed!
