Join artist Not Quite Light, best known for his twilight and nighttime photographs of the city, and learn how to observe the nighttime urban world around you, and the techniques needed to capture the photographs that you want to take.
Nighttime in the urban landscape is magical, often full of atmosphere. However, it isn’t always easy to balance the various techniques needed to record this streetlit world, with so many different elements needed to make a successful photograph.
Week One – The first week will be spent discussing how Simon approaches his work for Not Quite Light, and also looking at the other work of night photographers. This will provide a foundation for ways of seeing, understanding the various issues to be resolved, and appreciating the approach needed to capture successful nighttime photographs in the urban environment.
Week Two – In this lesson, we will explore the various techniques used to take photographs when it is dark outside and get to know our cameras.
Weeks 3-5 – This is when we can really get to the heart of the matter, making some work! Using a mixture of field trips and studio-based assessment, we will photograph the wider urban area around Islington Mill. We will explore techniques such as long exposure, handheld using high ISO speeds, and painting with light. You will also learn basic photo processing and editing. At the end of these lessons, you will have photographs that you will be proud of.
WEEK Six – In week five, we will choose one photograph to be printed digitally, and we’ll then display the work as a mini-exhibition in the studio, inviting friends and family down to see the pictures. It will be a lovely social event. Refreshments will be provided.
You will need a DSLR, tripod, and laptop with basic photo processing software for this course.

My name is Simon, and I'm an artist based at Islington Mill in the city of Salford.
I've been taking photographs for all of my career, and have worked for magazines such as Elle, GQ, Der Spiegel and The Saturday Telegraph Magazine. I've also exhibited in the UK, France, Germany, Hong Kong and China. My work has been featured internationally.
In recent years I've been the creative director of Not Quite Light, a project I begain in early 2015. With this project I explore the places we exist in the half-light of dawn and dusk, following themes of transition and regeneration.
The project is also a festival in the city of Salford, which involves working with lots other artists and creative people.
Recently I've been using film and field recordings in my work, and have made two documentary films.
I often give talks and conduct twilight photowalks. I've been a visiting lecturer at several colleges, and one of my proudest achievements in my career was in getting students into the colleges they wished to attend, and then go on to have successful careers in photography.
