Join us at Hope Press for a relaxed, hands-on evening exploring monoprinting — perhaps the most immediate and expressive printmaking technique there is.
No two prints are ever the same, which makes it perfect for letting go of perfectionism and just seeing what happens.
Over the course of the evening, we'll work through three core monoprinting techniques, each with a short demo followed by proper hands-on time to get stuck in:
Trace monoprinting — drawing onto the back of paper laid over an inked plate, using different tools and marks to control line and texture.
Stencils, masks, and textures — building up layered, considered compositions by controlling exactly where ink does and doesn't transfer.
Direct mark-making — working straight into the ink with palette knives, plastic cutlery, rags, and anything else to hand, for loose, gestural, expressive results (my favourite!).
Each student has their own workstation for the evening, so you'll be able to work at your own pace and get into the meditative headspace monoprinting really allows for!
By the end of the session, you'll have a stack of your own original prints, a solid grounding in the basic vocabulary of monoprinting, and hopefully a few happy accidents along the way.
This one's sociable by design — bring a friend, a bottle if you fancy it, and enjoy welcoming in the weekend in an inky way!

Believe it or not, print-making saved my life!
A few years ago, my life looked pretty normal: I was a Dad, a garden designer, and a keen walker. Suddenly everything changed. One day I simply couldn’t get off the sitting-room floor. I’d had a nasty bug and the next thing I knew: I was diagnosed with ME/CFS.
For a long time, things were pretty tough, but as the weeks passed, I began to discover painting and printmaking. And as the weeks turned to months I was making more and more art, and steadily feeling better.
Print-making was a refuge: a place to get better from. As I recovered my health I realised I wanted to share the magic of making things with other people; and the dream of Hope Press was born!
Everyone could do with more space in their life, more time for creativity, more peace and flow. I now run a variety of classes and workshops in printmaking – including a course for people with illnesses like mine – I hope you'll find something for you.
