Discover the magic of cyanotype – one of photography's most striking printing techniques – in this hands-on workshop in Bollington. You'll learn how this beautiful 19th-century process works, from coating paper with a light-sensitive solution to watching it transform under UV light into rich, bold blue prints. No photography experience needed – this workshop's built for first-timers and seasoned makers alike.
Over the session, you'll experiment with four different creative approaches to see how each one prints differently:
  • Hand-made stencils – cut your own shapes and patterns to block light directly
  • Natural objects – arrange leaves, feathers and found materials onto the paper for delicate silhouettes
  • Hand-drawn sketches – transfer your drawings onto tracing paper for linear, illustrative prints
  • Photographic images – turn them into high-contrast negatives for striking portrait or landscape-style prints
Your friendly teacher will guide you through every step, explaining how exposure time shapes contrast and detail, and how to compose images that really sing in this high-contrast medium. You'll get hands-on practice designing and cutting stencils, exploring how negative space transforms once exposed.
Best of all? You'll head home with a beautiful set of cyanotype prints you've made yourself – one-of-a-kind keepsakes from an afternoon spent discovering a process that's captivated artists for nearly 200 years.

Believe it or not, print-making saved my life!
A few years ago, my life looked pretty normal: I was a Dad, a garden designer, and a keen walker. Suddenly everything changed. One day I simply couldn’t get off the sitting-room floor. I’d had a nasty bug and the next thing I knew: I was diagnosed with ME/CFS.
For a long time, things were pretty tough, but as the weeks passed, I began to discover painting and printmaking. And as the weeks turned to months I was making more and more art, and steadily feeling better.
Print-making was a refuge: a place to get better from. As I recovered my health I realised I wanted to share the magic of making things with other people; and the dream of Hope Press was born!
Everyone could do with more space in their life, more time for creativity, more peace and flow. I now run a variety of classes and workshops in printmaking – including a course for people with illnesses like mine – I hope you'll find something for you.
