Want to take up film photography? Whether you've just started with disposable cameras or have inherited or bought or are planning to invest in a more complex camera, our photography class in Manchester will get you started.
Perfect for beginners who have bought, been given or inherited a film camera, or people with some point and shoot experience who want to move up. No skills needed!
What to expect:
Expert Ed Jones will guide you through all the questions you may have at the start of your film photography journey.
How do I know what film I should pick?
On this course, you'll be introduced to all the different film formats, types and processes so that when you're shopping for film you know what to look out for. We'll talk about which films are most appropriate for different scenarios and recommend a few to get started with.
I've got a new camera, will I learn how to use it?
Of course, if you've picked yourself up a film camera already or had one handed down to you, feel free to bring it along and we'll help you get to grips with it. You will leave with the knowledge of how to fully use and troubleshoot it when you're on your own!
Will I learn how to load and shoot my film?
Yes, you will have an opportunity to have hands on, guided practice loading and unloading the common types of camera. You'll also learn how different cameras communicate what they're seeing to you and how to take control of manual settings yourself.
What do I do with my film once I've shot it?
You'll leave knowing what sort of scans or prints to request when you drop off your film for development. We'll also touch on how you might begin developing and scanning at home if the film bug has really got you.
I've had film come back looking too dark/too bright in the past, will I learn how to avoid this?
After this course you'll understand how your camera reads light and the settings we use to get a correctly exposed image. With an introduction to the 'exposure triangle' you will know how to brighten or darken your future images and also when you might want to stop listening to the camera and take matters into your own hands!
You will get 10% off film cameras, film and developing on the day. By the end of the workshop, you'll have a solid foundation in film photography and the skills to keep developing your practice.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 3 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we may cancel the session; if that happens, we'll inform you and let you choose between a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

One of the things you learn in life is that telling stories and capturing them is so important. Many people have bought things to capture stories, whether it's a camera, microphone, video camera, or even a notebook, and don't ever get down to doing it because they don't really know how to do it, ” Simon Hepburn, Owner of Share Your Story.
Share Your Story first opened its doors in May 2025. It is a creative hub in the heart of Altrincham where you can receive the help, inspiration, and support to tell stories that create lasting impressions about the important things in your life.
Share Your Story is a unique space, with a fully equipped creative studio at the back which is available for hire for podcasting, video, and photography. Within this space, Share Your Story also provides courses in photography, writing, and creative content.
