Discover the world of fermentation with a festive twist in this fun, hands-on workshop in Shoreham-by-Sea.

3 hours Location Shoreham-by-Sea Class size 1 to 4 (public classes), 1 to 10   £80

Get ready to get hands-on with fermenting at this fun, friendly workshop in Shoreham-by-Sea. Whether you've never fermented anything before or you've already tried a few jars on the kitchen counter, you'll leave with fresh ideas and a batch of seasonal treats to show for it.
Fermentation is one of the oldest ways of preserving and transforming food, and it has been practised for thousands of years. It adds wonderful depth of flavour, and many fermented foods contain live cultures that can bring variety to a balanced diet.
In this relaxed session, you'll get stuck into three festive favourites. First up is Christmas kraut, a sauerkraut with a seasonal twist. Using warming spices and festive produce, you'll learn the simple techniques behind vegetable fermentation and pick up ideas for flavour experiments to try at home. Next, you'll explore seasonal sourdough and see how natural fermentation turns simple ingredients into a loaf worth celebrating, with a focus on working with a sourdough starter. Last but not least, there's Christmas kombucha. You'll follow the stages of this naturally fermented tea and learn how to flavour it with festive ingredients to create your own seasonal variations.
Along the way, you'll learn:
  • How fermentation works, and why people have relied on it for centuries
  • Practical techniques for successful fermenting at home
  • How to use seasonal ingredients, herbs and spices to build exciting flavours
  • How to care for, store and enjoy your homemade ferments
  • How to keep experimenting with confidence in your own kitchen
There'll be plenty of time to ask questions, swap ideas and sample a selection of homemade fermented foods and drinks. You'll take home your own creations, clear instructions, new skills and plenty of inspiration for fermenting long after the festivities are over. All ingredients and equipment are provided, and no previous experience is needed.
Come along solo or bring a friend, embrace the festive spirit, and discover the joy of making your own fermented foods and drinks this Christmas.

My journey into fermenting began over ten years ago, through my work as a homoeopath and my interest in the relationship between gut health and overall wellbeing.
Having experienced digestive health challenges myself, I began exploring natural ways to support my own digestion. This led me to discover the wonderful world of fermented foods and drinks, and I soon became fascinated by how simple ingredients could be transformed through the natural process of fermentation.
As I began making my own ferments, I shared my enthusiasm and knowledge with my homoeopathy patients. Before long, people were asking me to show them how to make these foods for themselves.
What started as small, informal workshops around my kitchen table gradually grew into something much bigger. More than a decade later, I now run friendly, hands-on fermenting workshops for groups of up to 20 people.
I love showing people just how easy, affordable and enjoyable fermenting can be. My workshops are relaxed, practical and welcoming, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions, taste different ferments and get stuck in making your own.
There's something incredibly satisfying about turning everyday ingredients into delicious fermented foods and drinks, and I hope to inspire people to continue experimenting in their own kitchens long after the workshop has finished.
