Busy hands and calm mind

Busy Hands and Calm Mind

You'll join a small group of six, where we start with basic preparation of sanding and oiling your stool.

Weaving your warp

Weaving Your Warp

The first step to weaving is building your warp. It's a satisfying start where you'll see your stool start to take shape.

Time for the weft!

Time for the Weft

It's starting to take shape now, and it's all your own work.

Finishing off

Finishing Off

A few final checks and tweaks, and it's ready to stand back and think, 'I made that'.

The finished stool

The Finished Stool

Even though we follow a pattern, no two stools are the same. Each one will have a little bit of its creator in it, and at the end of the workshop, you walk away with a beautifully finished, professional-looking Danish cord stool.

Join this weaving course in Manchester and create a beautiful, hand-crafted stool using the Danish cord technique.
Spanning three evenings, this class offers plenty of time to learn the craft in the relaxed, social atmosphere of the Track Brewery Taproom. You are even welcome to grab a drink or a pint from the bar to enjoy as you work. There is no need to worry if you are a complete novice; the workshop is designed for absolute beginners, requiring only nimble fingers and a desire to create.
During the sessions, you will:
  • Prepare your materials – get hands-on with the solid beech frame (flawlessly hand-machined in Manchester) by sanding and applying an oil finish
  • Learn the technique – learn the basic Danish paper-cording skills needed to weave your seat
  • Bring everything together to complete a premium-quality stool (470mm x 350mm x 355mm)
By the end of the three sessions, you will walk away with a deep sense of satisfaction and a durable, stunning piece of furniture that you can proudly say you made yourself.
Please note:
  • The sessions will take place on the 3rd, 10th, and 17th of March 2026.
  • We use traditional natural Danish cord. A black cord option is available for an extra fee, but this must be requested in advance.
  • The inside frame can be discreetly personalised with laser-cut text (great for wedding gifts or anniversaries). This option also needs to be requested in advance of the start date.
Please see other listings for full-day workshops and home-visit workshops.

FAQ

Can I swap my place with someone if I can't make it?
Yes, of course, but please contact me to let me know the change.
I'd like to add some peronalised text added to the stool. How do I request that?
This would typically be done on the inside of one of the legs. This would need to be added at the time of booking. Please get in touch via the 'message the tutor' button to confirm your text.
What should I bring/wear?
There will be a little bit of light sanding and oiling of the frame, so bring an apron or old clothes. However, I do have a spare if you've not got one.

I want to choose black cord. How do I do that?
Can you please message at the time of booking. There is an £8 supplement which is payable on the day.
I have arthritis or similar, can I still do this?
I would suggest not, as it can be a little tiring for your hands.

Twisted Loom was founded by me, Charlotte Cochrane, in Manchester, UK. I love crafting and making, and have won two Designer-Maker awards that I'm very proud of.
I also work as an upholsterer and have created original pieces of furniture, lighting and cushions.
After years of standing back and thinking, 'I made that', I now want you to have the same happy feeling of making something stylish and high-quality. I began by designing a small Danish cord stool, reminiscent of the well-known mid-century Danish designs that are so classic and everlasting in their style. The finished product is beautiful and looks amazing in any home!
