Authentic Masterpieces with Red Seals

Authentic Masterpieces with Red Seals

Children create 1–2 genuine sumi-e paintings and proudly add traditional red seals: their authentic artist signature! This empowering ritual transforms young painters into confident creators who take home gallery-worthy art.

Join sumi-e artist Jasmine Lau from Kapok House for an authentic children’s sumi-e painting workshop in Manchester. This beginner-friendly session introduces young artists to the calming and expressive art of traditional Japanese ink painting. This workshop happens once a month with a different theme every time. It's perfect to book as a single workshop or join us every month.
Designed for children aged 7–11, this workshop offers a gentle and mindful introduction to sumi-e. Through guided practice, children will learn how simple brush movements can create beautiful, expressive artwork.
What to expect:
  • Learn about the traditional “Four Treasures” of sumi-e: brush, ink, paper, and inkstone.
  • Practise brush techniques and pressure to create flowing lines.
  • Paint various natural-inspired subjects of the day's theme on rice paper.
  • Explore focus and creativity through mindful, single-stroke painting.
  • Seal finished paintings with a traditional red artist chop!
By the end of the session, each child will leave with one or two finished sumi-e paintings and a memorable introduction to this beautiful, calming art form.

Kapok House Sumi-e brings the serene beauty of Japanese ink painting to Altrincham and Didsbury, where delicate rice paper meets mindful brushstrokes that capture nature's quiet moments. Rooted in Zen philosophy, each stroke reflects your inner calm as you explore bamboo's gentle sway or lotus blossoms unfolding. Our beginner-friendly workshops welcome all ages and skill levels, including special sessions for children ages 7+ who love discovering ink's magic. You'll hold the Four Treasures (brush, ink, paper, and inkstone), learn fluid pressure and dilution, then lose yourself painting simple leaves to flowing forms in our peaceful studios. It's less about perfect pictures and more about presence.
