In this hand building class in London, you'll design and build your own ceramic lantern! You’ll construct a vessel and learn how to build a sculptural form using the hollow-vessel method and heat-gun shaping. Then cut patterned openings that cast beautiful shadows when lit from within and pattern-cut or pierce to create extra glow and shadow play.
This workshop is suitable for all levels and encourages slow, mindful making. Your lantern can be geometric, organic, minimal, or intricate — you decide the style and atmosphere. It can be free-standing or hanging.
What you’ll do:
  • Building a hollow lantern form using the hollow technique and paddles.
  • Planning and carving cut-outs for patterned light.
  • Piercing, perforating, and shaping decorative openings.
  • Adding texture, surface detail, and refined edges.
  • Considering airflow and candle safety in your design.
  • Choose from our earthenware glaze dips.
To finish, we will bisque-fire, glaze-dip, and fire again, then return your finished lantern to you by post within 4–6 weeks.
Proceeds go towards our community art projects, providing mental well-being and creative health, especially for those facing barriers.
What you'll get
  • Professional tools, materials, and aprons are provided.
  • Firing, glazing, and postage are all included in the ticket cost.
  • Refreshments, including a glass of wine/bottle of beer if desired, unlimited tea and coffee, soft drinks, and nibbles.
