Introduction Silver Jewellery Workshop for Beginners

Gain a broad understanding of traditional handmade silversmithing practices.

6 hours Location Pampisford Class size 1 to 8 guests   £140

This beginner-friendly taster course gives you a broad introduction to traditional handmade silversmithing. You’ll create a set of three silver pieces: a stylish sterling silver stacker ring, a characterful leaf-inspired pendant, and either classic stud earrings or small drop earrings. Each project can be customised with your choice of textures, finishes and design details, allowing you to make jewellery that genuinely reflects your own style.
Throughout the session, you’ll learn to use essential silversmithing tools and equipment safely and confidently. You’ll develop practical skills in forming, annealing, soldering, pickling, wire bending and metal shaping, as well as experimenting with textures and different finishing methods. You’ll then apply these techniques to create your jewellery pieces, adding your own creative flair to each one.
You’ll be guided step‑by‑step by Liz, with set projects to help you build skills and opportunities for individual interpretation. All materials for the planned projects are included, and additional silver can be purchased on the day if you’d like to customise your designs further or make extra items. Tools are provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
The workshop takes place in Liz’s garden studio, where she teaches in small groups to ensure plenty of individual support. Liz brings over 20 years of professional teaching experience, along with specialist diplomas in Fine Jewellery Making and Advanced Jewellery Making from the London Jewellery School. This combination of high‑level jewellery training and decades of classroom expertise means you’ll learn complex techniques in a way that feels clear, achievable and genuinely enjoyable. Her workshops are structured, supportive and packed with practical guidance, offering step‑by‑step teaching and personalised troubleshooting from an experienced educator.
Many participants choose to continue their learning by joining the Beginners’ Silver Jewellery Course or attending ongoing Returners’ Sessions.

  • 5/5 from David Hill, attended Aug 2025: Liz is a good teacher of jewellery techniques because she knows what she's doing, caters for all abilities and has patience and humour. I came away able to make three different silver jewellery pieces after a single day. The atmosphere in the class was friendly and constructive and everybody seemed to enjoy it. Liz is down to Earth and honest with no prima donna behaviour at all. I can't imagine a nicer and friendlier introduction to silversmithing.
  • 5/5 from Emma Williams, attended Aug 2025: Such a friendly class and I was amazed at the jewellery I made starting from complete beginner! Loving my oak leaf necklace most of all. My grown up son and I had a great day with plenty of help to get us to create.
  • 5/5 from Ingrid Scholtes, attended Jan 2025: Great course for beginners in relaxed atmosphere and very skilfull, knowledgeable and friendly teacher. Definetely recommend it!
  • 5/5 from Paul Darlow, attended Jun 2024: The workshop was a present from my wife as I have previously designed jewellery for her. I would thoroughly recommend trying this out as it is great fun, the day just disappeared and if you are lucky you'll come home with some beautiful creations. Liz is a great teacher. She clearly explains the science and the techniques we tried out. She demonstrates each technique in easy to follow chunks at a pace that suites you. She is patient and will help you out if you become frustrated but that did not happen to the two of us on the beginners course. The venue was a lovely garden room at Liz's home, but she is about to build a purpose built studio which sounds very exciting. You are provided with a financial allowance of silver and all the other tools etc that you need. We made a ring, pendant and two earrings (all of which my wife is delighted). On creating these we learnt alot of skills in a short time. The class was excellent value and a great day. What did I enjoy most - being creative and the whole day. Thank you Liz
  • 5/5 from Kevin Smyth, attended Feb 2024: An amazing experience and the perfect gift. Exceed expectations. Liz Taylor was a welcoming, informative and a skilled individual. She guided us through a wide variety of techniques and was open to any questions we had. In our beginners package we were able to make a ring, pendent and earrings. This was fantastic and we have high quality pieces we will keep forever thank you ️
  • 5/5 from Sharon Rockett, attended Jan 2024: We did a silver workshop and we had an amazing time. Liz explained everything and was a lovely teacher. Made some great pieces of jewellery. We would highly recommend this day.

I am the owner of The Silver Bird, an artisan, handmade jewellery business based in a semi-rural village in Cambridgeshire. I am a member of the Guild of Jewellery Designers, have a Diploma in Fine Jewellery making, and am currently completing a Diploma in Advance Jewellery making with the London Jewellery School. I specialise in bespoke commissions and customisable pieces, as well as teaching traditional jewellery making techniques.
I retired from an 18 year career as a secondary DT teacher, over which time I taught hundreds of young people how to design and make novel, beautiful products, by exploring material properties and generating unique forms.
During this time, I completed a Masters of Education at Cambridge University, focusing on creative idea generation and development. This gave me a particular passion for biomimicry; using and replicating the nature through product design to make unique textures and forms.
I have taught adult silver jewellery making classes in several schools, and have set up my own teaching school in Pampisford, Cambridge.
Jewellery making with silver is easily the most addictive thing I have ever done. And that's before we talk about the enchanting world of gemstones! Whether you are into contemporary or classic pieces, you are learning for pleasure, or you want your own career change, I can help you fall in love with the processes and achieve your jewellery-making potential.
Contact me for an informal chat if you'd like more information of what I can offer. I look forward to making with you.
