Join a Hobbycraft Colleague one-to-one and ask any questions you have about your sewing machine! Need help setting up your new machine? Want to learn about how to use certain tools and accessories? Getting stuck on a certain technique? Our craft expert will share tips and advice tailored to you.

This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Julie Morton, attended Oct 2026: Ot was a very informative session dawn was lovely
  • 5/5 from Georgina Jones, attended Jul 2026: Dawn was a great help in demonstrating the Singer Heavy Duty Machine. She was very patient and helpful. She explained everything clearly and was happy to go over things I was unsure of. She answered all of my questions succinctly, anything she was unsure about she found out for me. It was very helpful to have this session as although I have been using a sewing machine for many years it was good to have the time to get familiar with the machine before purchasing one. Only downside was that she was the only person on the upstairs shop floor so we were disturbed several times by customers enquiring about things. So despite paying for a 1 to1 session it was disrupted on three occasions. Despite this I would highly recommend the session and the Teacher.
  • 4/5 from Valerie Evans, attended Jul 2026: Wish I had more time to learn more Such a good experience Lots of fabrics

We are now off to practice and will book in again for some further guidance!

She was very patient, polite, friendly and explained things in a way that helped me pick things up very quickly. I got a lot more out of the session than I thought I would and would wholly recommend to anyone else considering it. Much more efficient than trying to self teach and at a reasonable price.

  • 5/5 from Nicola Simons, attended Oct 2024: Very good clear directions that helped get over my fear of sewing machines! Great pointers about the sewing machine I have at home. Would recommend.
  • 5/5 from Patricia Irvine, attended Sep 2024: WOW!!! This was a class and a half. Bez was great. She was friendly without being "too much". My main concern was blind hemming. I had read the instruction leaflet but couldn't make head or tail out of it. After we both made some mistakes, we finally got there, only for me to ask about hemming in the round e.g. trouser leg bottoms. We went back to the beginning, 'made' a trouser leg out of some scrap material and started again. I really enjoyed being with her and learning about the blind hemming. We also covered button holes and sewing a button on. I could have stayed all day with her and if there is something else I come across that I'm not sure about I wont hesitate to book another session with her. Thanks, Baz.
  • 5/5 from Fiona Bowman, attended Sep 2024: Dawn was really helpful and thoughtful and made everything very simple and easy. We had a few problems with the machine settings which wasn’t her fault and she very quickly made adjustments and showed me how it should be set up. Very useful session which I wish I had done when I first bought the machine but don’t remember ever being offered this. Good value and learned a number of useful hints and tips.
  • 5/5 from Pamela Dixon, attended Aug 2024: My one-to-one was with Dawn to take me through my new sewing machine, it was excellent. She was helpful and friendly and I came away feeling much more confident about using the machine.
  • 5/5 from Sarah Oyston, attended Aug 2024: Dawn was so kind and patient. Very thorough with all our questions will definitely be returning with the homework she gave us, hopefully completed
  • 5/5 from Christine Miller, attended Jul 2024: Dawn was very good explained everything step by step. Enjoyed the workshop and learnt more than I thought I would
  • 5/5 from Sam, attended Jun 2024: Dawn was a great teacher. Super friendly and most importantly, patient! She knew her way around a sewing machine and how to explain things without baffling me.
  • 5/5 from Julie Reeve, attended May 2024: Excellent beginner session with Dawn (Teeside pk) Looked at different machines, decided on a good basic LS19. Dawn explained and demonstrated how to set up and thread the machine. Learnt basic operations using the sewing driving test. Dawn was very friendly and helpful throughout. I now feel confident to buy a machine and get started on a hobby I have wanted to do for a long time. The Hobbycraft workshop made getting started very easy and accessible at a good price.
  • 5/5 from Robyn Evans, attended May 2024: Really enjoyed it, haven’t touched a sewing machine since being at school. Becks was lovely and explained and showed me to refresh my brain. Will be returning and would highly recommend :)
  • 5/5 from Rina, attended Apr 2024: Great personal tuition on my 1:1. Becs was welcoming and very helpful. I wanted to learn specific sewing techniques, hints and tips and will definitely recommend to friends. The store, staff and choice of fabrics and accessories was impressive.
  • 5/5 from Linda, attended Apr 2024: Rebecca’s know and patience was top notch. She guided me through all my questions. She eased me through examples and little tricks. I have the confidence and enthusiasm to make little projects at home. I’ll definitely be back.
  • 5/5 from Kaitlyn Atkinson, attended Apr 2024: Got so much from my lesson! Would recommend to everyone just starting out! Loved it
  • 5/5 from Danielle Ash, attended Apr 2024: Dawn was really helpful and patient with me I would definitely recommend this for some1 who is stuck
  • 4/5 from Patricia Reilly, attended Apr 2024: Friendly teacher, not 5 stars only because being in the shop, we were interrupted a few times by customers. Not a big issue though. I got what I was looking for in the session.
  • 2/5 from Joy, attended Apr 2024: What a disappointment. My one to one Workshop tutor admitted she had never used my requested machine before. The session was to use the display machine which it turned out had a piece missing so we couldn't start to attach a foot. A piece was taken from a different model also on display. Things seemed to improve with the auto threading but when it came to sewing things went downhill. The machine kept missing / dropping stitches on whatever pattern was tried. The tension was not accurate, (very obvious as it was threaded up with green top /white bottom)She made several attempts to adjust the tension to no avail. Consequently I never got to try out the machine I was hoping to purchase. It was suggested that children on holidays often play with and damage machines. This may well be the case but that's no consolation to me. Needless to say I was unable to complete my workshop and I did not go home with a new sewing machine as I had hoped to do.
  • 5/5 from Jenny Cathcart, attended Mar 2024: The teacher (Becs) was excellent. Very friendly, competent and informative. She taught me on the same model machine as I have just bought, so it was a perfect fit. I haven't used a sewing machine in over 40 years, so things have moved on a great deal. I am impressed with both the complexity available and the clear instructions I got. She also encouraged me to try everything myself. Terrific value for money. I feel ready to try everything myself now!
  • 5/5 from Lynsey Drinkhall, attended Mar 2024: Excellent workshop. Took it at the exact pace I needed and Dawn was really helpful.
  • 5/5 from June Scott, attended Mar 2024: Dawn the teacher was so kind and patient despite the couple of things that didn't go to plan.I did leave the session able to do buttonholes which was the reason for my visit.
  • 4/5 from Jan Johnson, attended Mar 2024: I haven’t done much sewing in a lot of years and this lesson was a total refresher for me. My sewing machine is approx 45 years old and it still sews beautifully but the demonstrator showed me the benefits of modern sewing machines. I now know more about what I am looking for in a new machine.
  • 5/5 from Pauline Colbourne, attended Feb 2024: My 1 to 1 lesson was great, just what I needed and Becci my teacher was really lovely, thank you x
  • 5/5 from Humaira Fatima, attended Jan 2024: the session was really helpful especially for somebody starting off. the teacher i had was so sweet and taught me how to set up the machine and to use it, and answered any questions i had.
  • 5/5 from Heather Perry, attended Jan 2024: Dawn was extremely helpful in explaining the feature of my new sewing machine and giving me hints and tips to get the most out of it. She was able to explain and answer the questions I had.
  • 5/5 from Lorraine Reidy, attended Jan 2024: Dawn was lovely. Very informative. I completed my first driving test. I got more from the class than I expected. Very good value for money. I am sure I shall meet Dawn again when I start another sewing project. The store was clean warm and pleasant environment. Thank you Hobbycraft what a lovely idea to support new to sewing or like me requiring a refesher course. Kind regards Lorraine stockton on tees hobbycraft store
