Join a Hobbycraft Colleague one-to-one and ask any questions you have about your sewing machine! Need help setting up your new machine? Want to learn about how to use certain tools and accessories? Getting stuck on a certain technique? Our craft expert will share tips and advice tailored to you.

This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Barbara Jeffreys, attended Sep 2026: Very informative and relaxed atmosphere. Thank you so much I learnt how to operate my sewing machine and how to select the various stitches. Also how to change bobbins, needles, thread and feet.
  • 5/5 from Layla Fullard, attended Sep 2026: Jen the woman who was teaching was very lovely and showed me a lot in the time allocated which was very helpful
  • 5/5 from Zoe Fenwick, attended Aug 2026: Tasha was absolutely lovely, very knowledgeable, patient and friendly, she put me completely at ease and was very helpful. The workshop is on a table in the middle of the shop on the 1st floor- this was mostly fine but we did get interrupted several times by people asking for help- Tasha handled this very quickly and well and it didn't impact the time we had, but a more private space might be something to consider in the future. Overall I would definitely recommend, a great experience and I left feeling much more confident with my machine!

  • 5/5 from Laura Clarke-Suttle, attended Apr 2026: Tasha was an excellent teacher: patient, incredibly knowledgeable, kind, fun to talk with and put me at ease. Tasha's explanation of some technical parts of the machine (thread tension, needle types) were clear, made lots of sense when explaining the issues with thread tension and helped demystify the machine. All of my questions were answered thoroughly and in a way that made using the sewing machine and planning projects seem achievable and most importantly, enjoyable. It was clear that Tasha was passionate about sewing and wanting to teach students to enjoy using their machine and create projects. I would highly recommend Tasha and this course to anyone wanting to learn more about their machine and sewing projects.

Jan has given me the confidence to finally unbox my machine and get back into sewing. Fantastic time.

  • 5/5 from Michelle Ingram, attended Jun 2024: I have recently bought a Singer Simple 3223. I am keen to learn how to use every aspect of the new machine, having had only 2 other Singers in 40 years, I needed to review my skills. The tutor, Tasha, was excellent. She was reassuring and knowledgable. The venue (Hull) was well set up in a cool quiet area. A Singer Simple 3223 and accessories were provided. The lesson covered threading, various foot use, specifically a rolled hem, all stitches available, stitch length, buttonhole, sewing on a button, tension. Great value for money and feel confident to use the machine to its potential.

  • 5/5 from Jan Eyton, attended Mar 2024: Relatively new to sewing/dressmaking, I tried to make buttonholes by myself but got very stuck and jammed up my machine. I booked the one-to-one to learn how to make buttonholes (which I did with and without the buttonhole foot) and how to clean and maintain my machine. Tasha (the “original Tasha” at Hull - there are two) was lovely, friendly and helpful. She demonstrated and let me have a go, explaining everything clearly step by step. I would definitely book again for help on a project. The only issue was that the machine in store had an automatic buttonhole feature that mine doesn’t, so I’d like to have been allowed to take my own. I have learned enough that I’ll be able to do a buttonhole manually though.

  • 5/5 from Suzanne Macleod, attended Aug 2023: Another really pleasant and useful workship with Jen at Hull. Today we learned how to prepare and insert a zip. It's all in the preparation. We also learned the 'Tailor's Knot' (Tailor's Tangle!) for simple hand stitching too. The tuition space in the Hull store is spacious and relaxing, and anything you need to buy is right there. We think very highly of this tuition, and highly recommend it to anyone learning how to sew with a machine. Thank you, Jen!
  • 5/5 from Alison Pullan, attended Aug 2023: I bought a sewing machine a couple of months ago, intending to teach myself how to use it. However I couldn't work it out on my own. • 5/5 from Rose Popplewell, attended Aug 2023: Jen our ‘teacher’ was excellent- so friendly, kind and very good at explaining in a calm manner. Learnt how to set the machine up, how to adjust the settings and had the opportunity to put my new learning to the test (I am an absolute beginner). Would recommend the lesson to any other new beginner.
