This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Amruthadas Sujith, attended Oct 2026: I really enjoyed the sewing workshop, and it went really well. I was completely new to sewing before the class, but by the end, I felt much more confident and no longer felt like a complete beginner. I have chosen the 1:1 session.Fiona, the instructor, was absolutely brilliant. She was friendly, patient, very supportive, and made the class enjoyable. She understood the level of the learner and adapted her teaching accordingly, which made it easy to follow and learn at my own pace. I left the workshop feeling confident and excited to continue sewing. I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone who likes to sewing.

  • 5/5 from Virginia Ferguson, attended Apr 2025: Lesson was a Christmas present to try sewing with a machine before buying one. I am an absolute beginner so the lesson started right from the basics of how to set-up and thread a machine to simple stitching two pieces of cloth together. My instructor was brilliant: really patient, had lots of tips and made the hour really enjoyable. I will definitely be dropping lots of hints about getting a sewing machine for my birthday and am looking forward to finally be able to wear trousers without turn-ups or skirts that are too long (and maybe from there who knows?!).

  • 5/5 from Alison Middleton, attended Jun 2024: Friendly. I asked lots of questions and all of them were answered.. Things were explained so that I could understand. The lady was professional explained things as we went a long. Was shown then I had a go. Wasn’t just watching. We also got the bag finished which was a lot better than some of the workshops where I have come out with something half finished and didn’t know how to finish it when I got home. I feel confident that when I get home I can make another.
  • 5/5 from Alison Johnstone, attended Feb 2024: This was really helpful - my teenage daughter was interested in getting a sewing machine for her birthday so this lesson was to show her how to use it. Lauren was excellent, explained things really well - simply but not patronising - and my daughter loved it’ was able to follow everything and therefore made me more confident in buying one for her. Really reassuring to know daughter can go back for a 1:1 once started if she needs to (she would struggle to join a group).

  • 5/5 from Rowan Timmins, attended Feb 2022: I took my 9 year old daughter for a workshop on how to use a sewing machine. We bought her a pink beginners machine for her birthday but after failing to understand the instructions and You Tube videos I decided to book one of your workshops. The venue was great and we felt really comfortable. Laura our instructor was extremely helpful, thorough and friendly and any questions we had, she answered them with great knowledge. Both me and my daughter were so excited afterwards and felt inspired to start sewing our own things. Once the workshop was finished, we went and bought some fabric to go and make our dog some bandanas. We cant wait to start out sewing journey and after Laura's help, we both feel much more confident to try something we otherwise thought was too scary. The only way we would improve the workshop was Laura struggled with getting electricity to the workshop table so had a fight getting lots of extension cables plugged in and she even nearly tripped over the wire at one point. If you could get electricity to the area safely that would be much better and safer.
