  • 5/5 from Jacqueline Thurlow, attended May 2026: My 70th and my daughter visiting from Australia. We both learnt lots of hints and tips, Sam is the most patient and encouraging tutor who aids confidence in people to try things they haven’t done before. We were mother and daughter as were the other couple present. The atmosphere was light hearted, the day warm but windows open for a cool draught, the light was excellent and birds were singing. We are very proud of what we produced and are eager to experifurther
  • 5/5 from Davina Gardner, attended Apr 2026: Absolutely lovely day, learning different techniques. Sam explained everything well and gave individual time if needed. Airey bright work space. Tea and coffee provided. Highly recommend
  • 5/5 from Catherine J Groslin, attended Apr 2026: I enjoyed the course very much. I had no experience of doing craft, but Sam's very clear demonstrations and the practice exercises helped a lot. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. We were guided through in stages, working towards creating a watercolour picture with embroidery. It was good to have a picture on a paper mount to take home. Everyone, whatever their ability, was supported, and Sam offered very helpful suggestions about our composition, colours, etc. The quality of the materials provided was first-class. I would recommend Sam's courses whole-heartedly. (Coffee, tea and biscuits were provided, thank you. People brought packed lunches or else found cafés in Manningtree during the 45 minute lunch break).

Hi, I am Sam Luxford, artist and creator behind the NaviStitch Brand. My NaviStitch work is created by hand-stitching on old navigation charts. I started the business in 2013. I was first inspired by a family that had been on holiday and stitched their road route onto an Ordnance Survey Map. Living on the coast and loving the water, I had old navigation charts to work with, and instead of a road route, I stitched an anchor, compass, boat, or other nautical-inspired image.
This is where I developed my techniques for embroidery on paper. The business has evolved a lot in that time and is now run from my shop on Manningtree High Street, where I also have an exhibition and teaching space.
My own work has also evolved a great deal, and I love to work with watercolours and collage. I then embroider into the created artwork. I have developed and curated a set of tools and materials that are a pleasure to work with when embroidering on paper. Until relatively recently, I had been quite secretive about my techniques but decided that it's time to share the skills.
I have been teaching in my shop since 2015 with great feedback from my students. I have also written two books based around my workshops. The books are really a workshop in book format, and I also offer a full materials pack alongside the book, everything you need to create the project in the book, in a letterbox-friendly kit.
I look forward to creating with you soon. Sam
