Fall in love with crochet by creating a classic granny square! You’ll be able to combine beautiful colours to stitch this traditional crochet design, perfect for setting you up for so many other projects. Granny squares can be used to make blankets, garments and more – we’re here to help you get started with your first one.

With the help of an Hobbycraft Artisan, you’ll learn how to crochet a granny square by using all the key techniques. You’ll use double and treble stitches, as well as learning how to decipher a granny square pattern and how to change yarn colours.

There’s a kit included with the workshop to give you everything you need for the project. Within the 90-minute session, you’ll be able to create one granny square, though you can continue to practice making more once you’ve got to grips with all the skills. The kit even features a pattern for a granny square blanket to help you continue your adventure in crochet!

This workshop is the perfect way to grow your crochet confidence, with tips and support from a pro! It’s ideal if you already have basic knowledge of the stitches but are looking to refresh yourself or develop further.

  • 5/5 from Samanta Do Amaral, attended Sep 2026: I really enjoyed the crochet class today! The teacher was lovely and really helpful throughout the session. The only experience you need before joining the class is knowing how to do a chain and a treble crochet stitch. With just these basic skills, I was able to follow along and make a granny square that I was really happy with. I had a great time!

  • 5/5 from Maxine Jones, attended Feb 2026: Brilliant course. The instructor is friendly, patient and has a wealth of knowledge. You do need to have some basic crochet experience to get the most out of this session. I left feeling much more confident to tackle various granny square patterns. Totally worth the price as you get excellent tutoring and a bag with two balls of yarn and crochet hook.
  • 5/5 from Miss Sarah Louise Hart, attended Feb 2026: Lovely class. There was only three other people so my daughter got a lot of help and came away with the most perfect Granny Square. She got a little tote bag, two lovely balls of wool and a crochet hook. Liz was a great teacher and I would definitely recommend.

  • 5/5 from Sian Shordon, attended Jun 2025: Lisa was a very patient and skilled teacher. By the end of the class we had all completed a granny square and they all looked like the picture advertising the class.
  • 5/5 from Debbie, attended Jun 2025: The tutor was super helpful especially I had no crochet skills at all. I managed to actually get the hang of the stitches and she explained things in an easy to follow way. She said I should have done the beginners course to crochet and in hindsight I probably should’ve done that but I still had fun and produced an ok granny square I just need to practice now. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone new to crochet who want to know how to master the granny square.
  • 5/5 from Joan, attended Mar 2025: After doing the beginner’s class for crocheting, which was great fun the next step was beginners crocheting a granny square. The teacher is great and so patient. I found it a lot easier to have a teacher showing how to do it and where I go wrong face to face. Had the lesson in the shop and it was nice to get a bag every thing needed for the lesson. The lesson was so much fun and the time just flys. Would definitely recommend.
  • 5/5 from Liz Irvine, attended Mar 2025: The teacher, Lisa is so good at talking us through the steps, plus coming round to each person indivually to check & help with what's going on. I like the fact that you can easily ask questions, plus also carry on if you're doing well! The venue is great and it's just a lovely afternoon. I'd be really interested in some Amiguarmi courses!
  • 5/5 from Charlotte Masters, attended Dec 2024: Great tuition, very easy to follow instructions, delivered with a lot of patience- thank you!
  • 5/5 from Jennie Stanton, attended Jan 2024: Good teacher, I found the class informative and fun. Friendly patient tutor. Unfortunately other customers disregard the notice not to disturb the teacher
  • 5/5 from Cathryn Howes, attended Nov 2023: An excellent session. I was the only attendee so got 1:1 tuition. I did this course following on from the beginners course. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. excellent tutor who was full of practical tips. All materials provided.
  • 5/5 from Maxine Holt, attended Sep 2023: Teacher was great. So patient and kind. Shame she was interrupted so many times by customers. Maybe a polite notice on the desk would be an idea. It’s only 1.5 hrs lessons so it’s a shame she was running around the shop helping customers.
  • 5/5 from Lisa Tuttlebury, attended Sep 2023: Materials provided, which was good value and included in the price of the course. I went to the beginners class, taught by Lisa. Enjoyed that so much returned to do this course. Only one little annoyance. Lisa kept being asked questions by customers. There should be a notice up, not to disturb staff while they are teaching. It really interrupted our class. Wasn't Lisa's fault, she was just being helpful. Apart from that I would highly recommend the course.
  • 5/5 from Lynn Cameron, attended Aug 2023: Teacher was kind and patient and made sure we all were clear on what we were doing
  • 5/5 from Sue Wood, attended Jul 2023: Lisa K was a lovely teacher, friendly and patient and took the time to explain each aspect of the crochet square for the granny square. The venue was pleasant. The materials provided were lovely. I found the experience good value for money.
