2 x 6 hours - 12 hours Location Brackley Class size 1 to 6 guests   £230

Make a jacket you'll wear for years at this two-day workshop at Stitching Kitchen, where you'll sew your own Manon or Sonny jacket by Tilly and the Buttons. Suited to confident beginners and above, it's a small-group setting with plenty of hands-on sewing, and your tutor will guide you through every stage.
Choose the Manon, which can be made as a classic trench or a cosy jacket, with a convertible collar and optional pockets, storm flap and sleeve straps. Or go for the Sonny, an easy-fit jacket with two lengths and two collar options. Whether you use reclaimed denim or fresh fabric, you'll finish with a jacket that's stylish and entirely your own.
Across the two days, from 10am to 4pm, you'll learn to:
  • Take accurate measurements and choose the right size and style
  • Adjust patterns, cut fabric and apply interfacing
  • Assemble the main jacket, mock flat-felled seams and pocket details
  • Tackle the collar and finish your jacket
Your pattern (RRP £19.50) is included, along with use of our Pfaff and Janome sewing machines and overlockers, tea, coffee, homemade cake and lunch each day. Some sewing at home may be required, and the structure can be adapted to suit each student. If you're upcycling denim for the Sonny, you'll need around three pairs of jeans, ideally with minimal stretch. Participants also get 10% off fabric and haberdashery.
Your tutor, Claire, is a couture designer and seamstress with more than 28 years in the fashion industry. She's passionate about sustainable fashion and reimagining wardrobe staples, so by the end of the second day, you'll be wearing a jacket you made with your own two hands.
Please note that this workshop is held in our light and spacious first floor studio at Stitching Kitchen, which is accessible by stairs.

Hannah Thompson is a self-taught textile artist. She has been crafting since childhood. At school, she took a GCSE in textiles but didn't complete the course. Even back then, her love was to interpret buildings in stitch and appliqué. The idea of using textiles to represent such a solid structure really appealed and still does.
Hannah had left creativity behind through her early adult life until suffering a breakdown and divorce in 2015. A dear friend invited her to an embroiderers guild meeting, and it sparked an interest and a desire to learn. The speaker that night had been stitching into plastic bags—the sky really is the limit when it comes to textiles.
Since then, she has immersed herself in all things textiles, attending workshops and stitching in company through that process. She has joined Embroiderers Guild, the Quilters Guilds and latterly the International Association of Feltmakers. Being part of these organisations offers opportunities to learn and to exhibit.
Her business, “Stitching Kitchen, ” is now her main focus. She offers a friendly and inclusive environment to stitch in company and to learn new skills. At the start of the business, she thought she would make and sell textile art and handmade items, but as time progressed, she found that sharing her skills and offering adults the opportunity to play while learning textile-based crafts was what she really enjoyed. The business is now situated in commercial premises in Brackley, Northamptonshire (just off the M40 and not far from the M1) and now offers regular drop-in sessions, sewing and textile-based craft workshops.
