One-to-one Sewing Workshop

Join us in store and talk to a craft expert for tips and advice on your sewing machine or project!

1 hour Class size 1 on 1       £28

Join a Hobbycraft Colleague one-to-one and ask any questions you have about your sewing machine! Need help setting up your new machine? Want to learn about how to use certain tools and accessories? Getting stuck on a certain technique? Our craft expert will share tips and advice tailored to you.

This is suitable for beginners looking to get started in sewing, providing the opportunity to get all the answers you need. It’s a great way to get a feel for your sewing machine, troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your current project in an easy, direct way or learn about features you’re not as confident with yet.

During the booking process, you’ll have the opportunity to let your Colleague know what you would like to focus on during the session. They’ll be able to prepare for a personalised workshop that answers all of your questions.

You’re sure to walk away a sewing pro, ready to take your designs to a new level!

*Please note that your workshop host will only have access to sewing machines that are currently stocked in Hobbycraft stores.

**Children 12 years and over can book onto this workshop but please note all children under the age of 18 will need parental/guardian supervision for the duration of the workshop.

Bring a friend: You can now use the £5 add-on feature at checkout to invite a friend along with you, whether you’re working on a project together or you’d simply prefer having some company during the session. Your friend can enjoy any demonstrations given, and they are free to ask questions, but they will not receive the same practical, direct one-to-one support as is offered to the lead participant.

Keeping everyone safe

At Hobbycraft, we want our workshops to be enjoyable, inclusive, and safe for everyone. Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Margot Taylor, attended Jul 2026: The session was exactly what I needed.to know. I was shown all the things I asked about. Given the chance to try out the things I was not sure about. It was just what was required. The whole experience was GREAT.
  • 5/5 from Dawn Harrison, attended Apr 2026: My daughter & her friend (13 & 14 years old) really enjoyed this workshop & learned how to set up & use a sewing machine. They found the teacher friendly & knowledgeable. Would recommend this to others.
  • 5/5 from Rachel Forbes, attended Mar 2026: This workshop was brilliant. The lady (I’m sorry I didn’t get her name) was really helpful and informative and interacted with both myself and my 11 year old daughter really well. She made sure my daughter understood how to set up the machine and what to do if something went wrong. It was great to be able to be hands on with the machine with an expert on hand to help.
  • 5/5 from Vicky Clark, attended Sep 2025: Dawn was a great teacher. From someone who has never used a sewing machine before, I feel confident to buy one and start trying some projects.
  • 5/5 from Olf Adam, attended Aug 2025: It was exactly what I needed, as a beginner I wanted a small project to start with and motivate me. We decided a pillowcase which was the perfect project to start with. Easy and we managed to complete it during the session. Ended up buying more fabric to practice the same at home. I recommend this workshop also to tourists like myself, was easy to book and find the place.
  • 5/5 from Sonia Burdass, attended Feb 2025: My teacher today at the Monks Cross store was Dawn. Dawn was very helpful and patient and we covered the topics I wished to discuss and she even demonstrated on the exact model machine that I purchased from Hobbycraft in November. I am happy with the content of the lesson and the expertise of Dawn.

  • 5/5 from Jessica Hendon, attended Sep 2024: This was a great 1-hour lesson. I came away with a skills refresh and confidence. I hadn't done any sewing since childhood. I now have a fantastic simple to use and great value machine that I have successfully used to alter two tops! I really liked the fact the session was with such a knowledgeable expert who was also very patient and tailored the session to my personal requirements. A good balance of practical activity and explanation. Lots of top tips and not at all overwhelming. The time went really quickly and the workshop space and equipment was high quality.
  • 5/5 from Carole Carter, attended Aug 2024: Dawn was very helpful in demonstrating the sewing machine I had enquired about, as such I bought the machine there and then! Great service, thank you!

  • 5/5 from Beverley Blackburn, attended Jun 2024: The teacher was very good at explaining and very patient. I was impressed with the sewing machine.
  • 5/5 from Bethany Walker, attended May 2024: I booked a one-to-one workshop so I could finally learn to use my sewing machine that I've had for ten years and have been too intimidated to touch. The lady who ran the workshop was so lovely and patient. She went through how to use the machine, and then let me have a go, and have a mess with all the settings. We used two different types of fabric ('stiff' and stretchy), and she regularly remembered and gave tips about making clothes, which is what I'm interested in doing. The venue was a room with windowed doors at the back of the store, so it was private but not so secluded that it would make someone with anxiety like me nervous. For approx. £20 for an hour, it was definitely worth it!
  • 5/5 from Anita Rangeley, attended Apr 2024: Attended the one to one ‘Learn to use your sewing machine’ class at Hobbycraft, Monks Cross today. My tutor was Isabel and she was great, covering all the basics which I wanted to know and a few extra things too. This is the second workshop I have attended and highly recommend them.
  • 5/5 from Nicholas, attended Apr 2024: I attended the Hobbycraft One-to-one Sewing Workshop on Saturday, 6th April, 2024, at the York Hobbycraft location. I was glad my mother was able to attend as a guest. Dawn, our teacher, was very friendly and informative about the basics of where to start with a sewing machine. She demonstrated how to thread the machine and then gave me guidance when I had a go at threading and using the machine. She explained in great detail the different stitches that can be used. I liked that the workshop took place in a private room at the back of the store and also that I was able to have hands-on experience with a sewing machine.
  • 5/5 from Susan Reid, attended Apr 2024: My teacher was very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed learning how to use the sewing machine and it has made me want to buy my own sewing machine.

  • 3/5 from Julie Jackson, attended May 2023: I really only wanted advice on which machine to buy. When I asked for advice in the store the lady I spoke to didn’t have a clue. She then told me that there was a class for £5 which there wasn’t. Dawn who did the one to one was helpful but as I’m not a novice I didn’t feel it was worth £20. I did buy the machine which was great but you should get the money refunded if you go on to buy one from hobby craft.
