Introductory Charcoal Drawing Class

A calm, beginner-friendly charcoal drawing workshop for your group, brought to your venue in the Cambridge area.

2 hours Location Comes to you Class size 10 to 30 guests   £50

Bring a calm, creative session to your group with a private charcoal drawing workshop, led by me at your venue.
This is a beginner-friendly 2 hour workshop for groups of 10 or more in the Cambridge area. I come to you with all the materials, so all you need to provide is a room with tables and chairs. It works well for friends, clubs, birthdays, team days and community groups.
Charcoal is a playful art form that is perfect for finding your creative flow, so whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced artist, you will be able to switch off and get stuck in. We will start with a warm-up and an introduction to the various techniques, and you do not need any prior experience.
This is a calming and mindful experience, whether you want to improve your drawing skills or simply switch off and relax. You will be encouraged to focus on the activity of drawing and the journey rather than the final outcome, and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get some great hands-on tips. You will take home your own charcoal drawing.
How it works:
  • Groups of 10 or more, at £50 per person (£500 minimum for the 2 hours).
  • I travel to you, within around 20 miles of Cambridge.
  • Please give at least 2 weeks' notice when you send a request.
  • You provide a room with tables and chairs for everyone. If anyone in your group has access needs, let me know and we will plan for them.
Send a request with your preferred date, time and group size and I will be in touch.

  • 5/5 from Eira Bevan, attended Nov 2020: Thank you for a really lovely class, like you said I probably wouldn't have chosen to attempt to draw that photo of the crystal but as a beginner it was great to just be able to experiment and ask questions and be in a supportive environment. I do love charcoal as a medium.
  • 5/5 from Jem Ma, attended Aug 2020: Excellent course! I really enjoyed taking time out to get back to drawing. Wonderful tutor, she takes time to explain how to develop shadowing in a particular areas. Definitely returning while I'm still working from home.

  • 5/5 from Sarah Burnett-Moore, attended May 2020: I've never used charcoal before yesterday but Irene was very clear with her guidance. Her multiscreen tech use was very impressive and much more sophisticated than some Zoom lessons I've done. I am very pleased with the drawing I did!

  • 5/5 from Jess Rumbold, attended Sep 2019: This class was really great. I learnt how to use different techniques and materials to creat a drawing of an owl. The two hours flew by I was so absorbed and enjoying myself. The teacher is lovely and her instructions are clear and she comes around with really useful tips. I got home after class and showed my husband my drawing and he didn't believe that I did it. Just shows what quality teaching can help achieve. I will be back.
  • 5/5 from Gs Gs, attended Aug 2019: CLAss was excellent experience. Irena is really informative, talked us through the materials, gave enough guidance and tips but allowed us to be creative. Time just flew by as everyone was engrossed in their masterpieces. I havent drawn in 20 years and was never particularly talented but i felt completely at ease and created something which i was actually quite proud of. .i have never used charcoal before so it was a great experience to introduce myself to that. The class was small which is great as lots of opportunities to ask questions tips etc. Would definitely return for more classes.
  • 5/5 from Isabella Isabella, attended Jul 2019: What a fantastic class! Irene, our teacher, was fantastic - very attentive and instructive. There was a lovely light atmosphere and a mix of ability levels so no need to be worried if you are new to the arts. Irene walked us through the workings step by step and everyone in the class had a fantastic price of art work to take home at the end. Cant wait to go to another one!
  • 5/5 from Mar Mar, attended Jun 2019: I cant wait to book another class at Makings & Musings, really enjoyed the friendly owner Irene and I felt inspired afterwards. Thanks for the great, informative evening!
