Using natural wool, shimmering glass beads, and intricate metal wires, you'll follow step-by-step instructions to craft your own unique snowflake.
Along the way, you'll learn traditional embroidery techniques, including delicate beadwork and elegant goldwork. Whether you're new to stitching or an experienced maker, this activity will guide you through each stage in a fun, relaxed setting.
No previous experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Just bring yourself and your creativity!
All materials for this activity are provided, including:
  • Natural wool felt
  • Silver-plated goldwork wires
  • Silver-plated glass beads
  • Cotton thread
  • Natural silk ribbon
(Vegan option available on request)
During the workshop, you will learn about:
  • Beadwork – attaching beads to fabric as decoration – dates back thousands of years. There are early examples from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Native American cultures. Glass seed beads were developed by the Romans and mechanised in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) in the 19th century, when beadwork embroidery became popular for decorating garments and accessories.
  • Goldwork – using precious metal threads and wires to decorate cloth – has also been around for thousands of years and is thought to have originated in China. Modern European goldwork materials and techniques date to the Middle Ages, when they were mainly used to decorate religious garments and fabrics.
You'll leave the session feeling wonderfully festive, ready to hang your sparkling handmade creation or give it as a truly special gift.

I am a textile enthusiast with over 20 years experience working with a wide range of textile arts. I am particularly interested in historical techniques and love learning about their origins and social contexts. I enjoy taking inspiration from traditional textiles and applying 'old' techniques to my own modern designs.
Originally trained as a biologist, I am constantly inspired the natural world and aim to make my artistic practice as sustainable as possible, using mostly natural and upcycled materials.
I truly believe that textiles are a fundamental part of human culture and experience - they are EVERYWHERE. So much so that we often forget about them, dismiss them and undervalue them. They are thought of as ‘domestic’, ‘feminine’ and ‘old-fashioned’. I would love to change this image! To show that textiles are for everyone. Absolutely anyone can sew, knit, crochet, weave, spin, dye. And the work that they produce can be just as awe-inspiring, thought-provoking and beautiful as any other medium. Not to mention the benefits for mental health and wellbeing!
