Do your favourite jeans need mending? Or is there an old jumper at the back of your wardrobe that needs an update? Visible mending is a fantastic way to extend the life of your clothes, reduce overconsumption, be creative, and learn a new skill in the process!
This workshop will focus on using weaving techniques to create simple two-colour patterns in your darning. Darning is a versatile technique that can be used to repair denim, knitwear, and many other textiles. Darning was traditionally made to go unnoticed, but where's the fun in that? Adding colour, patterns, and creative flair to your darning is a great way to celebrate the act of repairing and add your own personal style to your clothes.
In this workshop, we will go over the theory of designing and weaving patterns in your darning. We will practise three different woven patterns, exploring different fabric bases and darning materials. This workshop is an intermediate-level class, and previous experience of darning or weaving will be helpful. You are welcome to bring your own garment in need of a patch or practise with provided samples.
Materials:
  • Natural wool yarn
  • Vintage cotton embroidery threads
  • Cotton and knitwear practice samples
  • Garment of your choice (optional)
For private workshops, the private booking surcharge can be waived if customers are providing their own venue. Please get in touch to discuss this option.

I am a textile enthusiast with over 20 years experience working with a wide range of textile arts. I am particularly interested in historical techniques and love learning about their origins and social contexts. I enjoy taking inspiration from traditional textiles and applying 'old' techniques to my own modern designs.
Originally trained as a biologist, I am constantly inspired the natural world and aim to make my artistic practice as sustainable as possible, using mostly natural and upcycled materials.
I truly believe that textiles are a fundamental part of human culture and experience - they are EVERYWHERE. So much so that we often forget about them, dismiss them and undervalue them. They are thought of as ‘domestic’, ‘feminine’ and ‘old-fashioned’. I would love to change this image! To show that textiles are for everyone. Absolutely anyone can sew, knit, crochet, weave, spin, dye. And the work that they produce can be just as awe-inspiring, thought-provoking and beautiful as any other medium. Not to mention the benefits for mental health and wellbeing!
