Take Away Your Hand-stitched Tote Bag

Tuck in your threads and you're ready to go!

Make your own hand-stitched cotton tote bag using just three basic stitches. Inspired by the beautiful yet hardy wildflowers I have found along the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, this workshop is the perfect way to welcome in spring.
Whether you're new to stitching or an experienced maker, this workshop will guide you through each stage in a fun, relaxed setting. No previous experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Just bring yourself and your creativity!
All materials for this activity are provided, including:
  • 100% cotton tote bag with a digitally printed background design
  • 100% cotton embroidery threads
All materials in this workshop are plant-based and vegan-friendly.
During the workshop, you will learn about:
  • Embroidery: an ancient art form, with evidence of decorative stitches used to adorn furs and animal hide as far back as 30, 000 BC! Cultures all over the world developed their own styles and techniques, with ancient China being considered the cradle of modern decorative embroidery.
  • Local wildflowers: learn about the inspiration behind the piece, inspired by the wildflowers red campion, great mullein, and chicory.
For private workshops the private booking surcharge can be waived if customers are providing their own venue. Please get in touch to discuss this option.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to sew?
Absolutely not! The evening is about having some creative fun and we will take everything step-by-step.
What is the atmosphere like?
The sessions are very social and relaxed. Depending on the venue, they are sometimes quite lively.
Will I be able to finish in 2.5 hours?
The sessions are designed to provide the enjoyment of hand-stitching a finished item in a short session. I take care to set up each persons kit in advance - needles threaded and knots tied - so we waste minimal time faffing and maximum time with the fun part!
See more FAQs
What if I need more time?
Most people are able to finish in the time allocated, but participants are welcome to take home any materials necessary to complete the piece if they prefer to take things slowly.
What is accessibilty like at your venues?
All venues have step-free access, but access to parking and toilets is dependent on the venue. At Northstowe it is helpful to know of any wheelchair users in advance, as we can make adjustemnts to the seating. If you have any questions about accessibility please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Can you provide written instructions?
Absolutely. Just let me know in advance if you would like a set of written instructions printed.

Steph Norwood - Textile Artist
Steph Norwood - Textile Artist

female Women-owned

I am a textile enthusiast with over 20 years experience working with a wide range of textile arts. I am particularly interested in historical techniques and love learning about their origins and social contexts. I enjoy taking inspiration from traditional textiles and applying 'old' techniques to my own modern designs.
Originally trained as a biologist, I am constantly inspired the natural world and aim to make my artistic practice as sustainable as possible, using mostly natural and upcycled materials.
I truly believe that textiles are a fundamental part of human culture and experience - they are EVERYWHERE. So much so that we often forget about them, dismiss them and undervalue them. They are thought of as ‘domestic’, ‘feminine’ and ‘old-fashioned’. I would love to change this image! To show that textiles are for everyone. Absolutely anyone can sew, knit, crochet, weave, spin, dye. And the work that they produce can be just as awe-inspiring, thought-provoking and beautiful as any other medium. Not to mention the benefits for mental health and wellbeing!
