This course is aimed at students learning, developing, and mastering many traditional and modern hand embroidery skills and stitches. The culmination of your work will be a beautifully textured and 3-dimensional open display triptych box. You will make five panels, one for each month of the course, and will present your newly learned skills of textural stitches, constructing a personal and unique under-the-sea aquarium of reeds, coral, and tropical fish swimming amongst ancient wrecks and sunken treasures in an enchanted undersea world beneath the waves. This comprehensive 5-session multi-disciplinary course guides students in creating a 3D "Under the Sea" (open-type box) diorama. Combining textile art with sculpting and painting, this course is designed for embroiderers looking to blend traditional hand embroidery with modern mixed-media techniques to create a textural masterpiece.Over five sessions, participants will design and construct 5 bespoke, high-end "Under the Sea" scenes to turn into a book nook display. Students will master a variety of textured embroidery stitches each session to create coral reefs, stitch dimensional marine life, apply mixed-media paint techniques to fabric, and sculpt raised 3D elements (fish, jellyfish, seahorses) using air-drying paper clay. The final piece will be a stunning, multi-layered, textural delight to the eyes, showcasing a vibrant, textured underwater world of pure stitchwork.
Session 1: Design, Planning, and Background Textures
Session 5: Techniques: Edging, securing the final composition, and adding any final, small-scale details to the sea floor.
