Beginner's Pearl Stringing and Knotting Workshop

Traditional silk knotting techniques for jewelers

6 hours Class size 1 to 2 guests       £175 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Level: Suitable for beginners and jewellery makers wishing to expand their professional skill set.
Join professional pearl stringer and educator Anja Moehler for a focused one-day workshop exploring the traditional craft of professional pearl stringing and knotting.
Working step by step, you’ll learn two classic methods of professional pearl stringing, discovering how to achieve beautifully even knotting, consistent tension, and a refined finish.
You’ll also learn how to create an elegant endless knotted pearl necklace without a clasp, giving you three versatile techniques that can be applied to both contemporary jewellery and the repair or restoration of treasured pieces. Alongside the practical tuition, Anja will share professional advice on selecting stringing materials, working with cultured pearls, caring for finished jewellery, and incorporating pearl stringing into your own jewellery practice. Time permitting, the day will also include troubleshooting, frequently asked questions, and practical tips on design and construction.
Pearl stringing is a highly transferable skill that requires care, precision, and patience rather than expensive equipment, making it an accessible addition to both emerging and established makers’ toolkits. Whether you’re interested in creating your own jewellery, offering restringing and repair services, or simply learning a traditional craft, this workshop will provide the confidence to continue practising at home.
With a small class size, the workshop offers an excellent balance of demonstrations, practical making, and individual tuition, allowing plenty of opportunity to ask questions and receive one-to-one guidance throughout the day.

Each participant will receive:
  • An 8″ strand of 5–6 mm cultured freshwater pearls

Hi, I'm Jo, founder of Central Scotland School of Jewellery.
I started making jewellery because I loved the combination of creativity and problem-solving. Jewellery has an amazing way of turning simple materials into something people treasure, and I still find that just as exciting today.
In 2016, I founded Central Scotland School of Jewellery in Dunblane with the aim of making jewellery-making welcoming and accessible to everyone. Since then we've introduced thousands of people to the craft, from complete beginners making their very first ring to experienced jewellers developing specialist skills.
One of the things I'm most proud of is the team we've built. Alongside my own teaching, our workshops are delivered by a carefully selected group of experienced jewellers and specialist tutors, each chosen for their expertise and their friendly, supportive approach. Every tutor teaches to the same high standards that we've developed over the last ten years, so whichever workshop you join, you'll be in expert hands.
The best part of my job is watching someone arrive saying, "I'm not creative, " and leave a few hours later wearing something they've made themselves. That moment of surprise and pride never gets old.
Alongside running the school, I've taught at university level, worked with various national craft organisations, and regularly collaborate on projects that help make jewellery education more accessible.
Whether you're joining us for a fun day out, celebrating a special occasion or discovering a new hobby, we'd love to welcome you to the bench.
