Make a Lined Upholstered Box

A fun, hands-on course making a bespoke upholstered storage box.

6 x 3 hours Class size 1 to 6 guests       £500

In this friendly upholstery leisure course, each student makes their own bespoke upholstered lined storage box, resulting in an interesting and rewarding learning journey and a very useful piece of furniture.
The 40x60x40cm box will have a hinged lid and a cushioned top, perfect for storage or as a little side table, and robust enough even to use as an occasional perch. Working with traditional tools and sustainable natural materials, we will take time and care to gain confidence with the tools and techniques. Best of all, each student will be able to choose their own decorative finish.
Making this useful piece (a lidded hinged storage box) allows for a really bespoke student finish (add feet, shallow buttoning, piping, deep buttoning, etc.), but it also teaches a broad range of technical upholstery skills. In fact, the lined box is a curriculum project on the AMUSF formal 1-year accreditation. The beauty is, we are making it simply for pleasure.
As with all my workshops, this one is beginner-friendly, but those with previous upholstery experience will also enjoy the challenges and processes involved in making this stand-alone piece from the frame.
Groups are kept small, with a maximum of 6 people. I provide tuition, the core box frame, all tools for use throughout, and all materials, with the exception of top fabric. Each student leaves with their own me-made box.
Workshops take place in my studio in Star Brewery in the centre of Lewes, a historic market town just an hour from London and 15 mins from Brighton. There will be lots of live upholstery projects from commissions and other student groups to reference and discuss over a cup of tea.
My goal is to share the joy of using your hands, to give people the skills and confidence to consider future upholstery projects, and to think about materials and the environmental impact of the choices our making creates. I see my role as helping you learn at a pace and level that suits you, matching my approach to what best works for you. This is your time and your experience. I'll share tips, anecdotes, and ideas. We'll laugh a lot and learn a lot too. I want you to be proud of what you make, and I want you to feel emboldened to keep on being creative.

I am an upholsterer living and working in East Sussex. I produce modern upholstered footstools. Useful objects, made well.
My practice is informed by the idea that “If you can’t fix it, you don’t own it.”
Alongside regular upholstery jobs (recovers, repairs, reupholstery), I run Rounded by making & selling upholstered birchwood modern footstools; using 100% natural & recycled materials, these pieces are made for life, not landfill.
With none of the corners that so frustrate upholstery newcomers, I thought the footstools made the perfect 1-day workshop experience and now run these monthly at The Paddock Studios, Lewes, and as a guest tutor further afield. Folk come, learn, laugh, make & leave with their very own footstool.
I trained as a Prop Maker at Central School of Speech & Drama, and on graduation worked in theatres & festivals including The Young Vic, Stephen Joseph Theatre & Edinburgh Fringe. I fell into marketing films, working at Universal and then Paramount Pictures for years, before realizing how much I missed making, so began training in traditional upholstery at the Thomas Calton Centre, and then in more depth at The Good Life Centre, both in London.
Three things I know: Never underestimate the power of a biscuit. Measure twice, cut once. It's risky wearing flip-flops in the workshop.
