Create a beautiful and functional piece of pottery in our fun, beginner-friendly clay workshops. Whether you're dreaming of your perfect morning coffee mug or a stylish milk jug you'll learn the skills needed to bring your idea to life.
You'll join either our Intro to Hand Building or Slab Pot class and while other makers in the session may be working on different projects, your instructor will guide you step‑by‑step through the essential pottery basic techniques needed such as wedging, coiling, slab building, slip and scoring, and how to build strong, stable forms. You’ll also learn common pitfalls and how to avoid or fix them, making this workshop perfect for complete beginners.
You'll learn how to add handles, texture, patterns, stamps, and decorative details to make it uniquely yours. From rustic farmhouse styles to modern minimalist designs, the possibilities are endless.
Working with clay is a wonderfully relaxing experience, allowing you to slow down, get hands-on, and enjoy the satisfaction of creating something from scratch. As you shape and personalise your piece, you'll discover why pottery has become such a popular and rewarding hobby.
Paint your piece in the same session — included!
Once your mug or jug is built, you’ll get to paint it during the same class at no extra cost. Choose colours, patterns or details to make your piece truly unique.
After the class
Your pottery will be dried, glazed and professionally fired, ready for collection in 4–5 weeks.
Whether it's used for your morning brew, displayed proudly in your home, or given as a gift, you'll leave knowing you've created something special with your own hands.
A quick note
Hand‑built pottery can occasionally develop issues during firing. Your instructor will show you how to minimise these risks, and if anything unexpected happens, we’ll do our best to fix it.
Please note that other clay workshops may be taking place at the same time as yours. While participants may be creating different items, all projects use the same slab-building techniques, so everyone will be learning and following the same core pottery-making process.
What you'll get
A completed mug or jug will be ready for you to collect 4-5 weeks after the class.

What to bring
Everything you need will be provided at the workshop, but please feel free to bring your own stamps or items you may want to impress into the clay, such as coins, leaves, pasta shapes, etc. Lace works particularly well. Playing with clay can be messy, but it will wash out of clothing. We advise you to wear old clothes or bring an apron. You don't need to bring your booking confirmation, as we will have a record of it.
Suitable for

Crafty Monkey, based in St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, was founded in 2010 after Chrissy Bennett, the owner, attended a pottery painting workshop for her friend's hen party. From a one-man band, it has grown to employ 6 members of staff and is now open 7 days a week with monthly adult evenings, some of which are themed. The studio seats up to 40 people at a push, but you can book in anytime to come in and paint pottery from our extensive range. We have a party area that can comfortably seat 10 (12 people at a push).
We offer a range of things from pottery painting and build-a-bear to baby prints and 3D baby casts. We are able to tailor workshops to specific requests. You can book individual or group bookings with us - anything to suit your crafting needs! Depending on the group size and where it is, we may also be able to come out to you!
