Join this brush making workshop in Sheffield and discover the satisfying, traditional craft of creating your own brushes from scratch. This full-day activity is a wonderful way to connect with your hands and learn a unique skill in a friendly, supportive environment.
During the workshop, you will learn how to make at least four different brushes using natural materials like arenga, tampico, and broomcorn fibres. Your teacher will guide you through the process, showing you how to tie different styles, such as the beautiful turkey wing and hawk tail designs. You can experiment with various colours of nylon cord for binding, adding a personal touch to your creations. The session will also cover the fascinating history of brush making and the unique properties of the fibres you will be using.
All materials and tools for this activity are included.
Please be aware that this craft is a surprisingly physical workshop. It requires a reasonable amount of dexterity in your hands and feet, as well as good grip strength. If you have any questions about this, please do get in touch. We will be working with our shoes off, so you might like to bring a pair of warm socks to keep you cosy!
You'll leave this session with an amazing new skill and a collection of beautiful, functional brushes you have made entirely by yourself, ready to be put to use.

I am a brush and broom maker living in wild West Wales. Working with natural, sustainable materials is really important to me and I am inspired to make pieces that are beautiful as well as useful. Previously I’ve experimented with carving wooden spoons, turning bowls on a traditional pole lathe and weaving baskets, but this is the craft that seems to have stuck!
All of my brushes and brooms are made by me, entirely by hand. The only mechanised tool that I use is my electric chainsaw which I use for cutting wood for broom handles from my small patch of woodland.
I was selected as a TOAST New Maker 2022.
My plans for the future include experimenting with natural dyeing so I can incorporate this into my practice, and growing my own broomcorn.
Making tangible, useful things helps me to feel grounded. When I’m not crafting, you can find me growing vegetables on a windy hillside, walking in the woods, or renovating my nearly 200 year-old house.
